MOVIE TITLE:   47 Meters Down Uncaged

RATING:   PG-13

LENGTH:    1 hour, 29 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE: B

IN A NUTSHELL:

Written and directed by Johannes Roberts, this shark adventure is pretty much what you would expect.  It’s not quite a sequel since it doesn’t have the same people as the original 47 Meters Down  Well, the director is the same.  It’s more of a follow-up to the genre.  There are more bites and interesting things to look at under the water with even more screaming and crying.  Like most shark movies, you’ll hold your breath and laugh a lot.

For all of us Americans who struggle with the metric system, 47 meters is 154 feet.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Bullying by mean girls
  • Some girls flip the bird
  • Girls in bikinis
  • Some profanity
  • You see a lot of people get eaten by sharks, sometimes with blood and gore.
  • People in perilous situations.
  • Some Spanish is spoken without subtitles but you don’t need to know what is said.
  • There is a mixed-race, blended family

THEMES:

  • Persistence
  • Don’t make stupid choices
  • Family

THINGS I LIKED:

    • This is the acting debut of Sistine Rose Stallone. Yes, THAT Stallone.  Her parents are Slyvester and Stallone and Jennifer Flavin.
    • Sophie Nelisse did a great job.  I really loved her in The Book Thief .  That was such a powerful movie.
    • Lots of jumps and scares.
    • They filmed the island scenes in the Dominican Republic.
    • In case you were wondering, they filmed the underwater scenes at the bottom of a tank in London, never more than 20 feet deep (that’s still pretty deep!)
    • Side note: Sharks may actually be color blind since they only have a single long-wavelength-sensitive cone type of retina.
    • Who doesn’t love John Corbett?  He always plays such likable characters such as My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Northern Exposure: The Complete Series
    • Slow-motion death scenes.
    • You get to see a lot of shark action up close.
    • I liked the very first underwater scene during the intro where you can’t quite tell what’s happening but you’re intrigued to find out.
    • The Mayan ruins are cool.  Have you ever seen real ones?
    • You’ll feel claustrophobic.
    • Some people think this is better than the original film.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • This movie should have hit theaters during Shark Week, right?
  • Other than surviving, there really isn’t any character development.  The movie exists to provide some fun, scary entertainment.
  • Soooo much screaming and crying.
  • Sharks can NOT swim backward or stop suddenly.
  • Don’t try to punch a shark in the nose because that’s way to close to its mouth full of sharp teeth. Instead, hit the shark in its gills or eyes, where they’re the most sensitive.
  • Ok, so wait a second. The girls jumped off the cliff….so where did all of their scuba gear come from?
  • Because sooooo many scenes are dark under the water, it’s going to be hard to watch this on a small device once it goes to streaming.
  • There are MANY scenes where the sand is kicked up from the bottom of the ocean and it’s super murky so you can’t really see what’s going on.
  • The whole time, you’re probably wishing the mean girls from the school were in the water too, eh?
  • It feels like a typical horror movie where people get picked off one by one in unique ways with terrible dialogue.

FUNNY LINES:

  • “Here fishy, fishy.” – Sasha (Corinne Foxx)

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “It’s not my fault that nobody likes her.” – Sasha

“You know, that’s a real nasty thing to say.” –  Grant (John Corbett)

  • “Cave diving is dangerous.” – Sasha
