IN A NUTSHELL:
The story is about Joy, who is ready to give away her newborn baby. She meets a cheeky street urchin and together, they’re on a road trip in Ireland.
The movie was directed by Emer Reynolds, who is best known for his documentaries. This is his first fiction feature film. The movie was written by Ailbhe Keogan.
THINGS I LIKED:
- They had me at Academy Award-winner Olivia Colman. She’s absolutely mesmerizing in every role she plays. As much as I love her, she seemed a bit too old to have a baby. In real life, she’s 43 years old.
- The young actor, Charlie Reid, does a fantastic job in this movie.
- I love road trips and odd-ball pairs in movies.
- Heartbreaking and insightful conversations.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- So much yelling and profanity just to get to the few heartwarming moments.
- It’s a slow burn with an uncertain message in the end.
- I hate watching people throw up in movies. Bleh
- There are moments that definitely feel forced.
- It always hurts my heart to hear a baby cry. If that bothers you, you won’t like this movie because a baby cries a LOT.
- Sometimes it’s hard to understand the Irish accent and what’s being said.
- Most of the attempted humor just didn’t land for me.
- It’s pretty predictable.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Profanity and F-bombs
- A mother breastfeeds her baby, but we don’t see everything up close.
- A kid steals a car.
THEMES:
- Dysfunctional families
- Parenting
- Childhood memories
- Emotional trauma
- Pain
- Unconventional families
FUNNY LINES:
“My name’s Joy. I know, false advertising.” – Joy (Olivia Colman)
