MOVIE TITLE: 65
This action thriller movie is now available in theaters and Video on Demand.
RATING: PG-13
LENGTH: 1 hour 33 minutes
MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE: B
IN A NUTSHELL:
The dramatic story is about an astronaut who crash-lands on a mysterious planet, only to discover he’s not alone.
The film is both written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who also worked together on the film Haunt. The movie was shot in only 40 days! Another thing that’s unusual about this movie is that it only had one press screening before its release, less than 24 hours before it was released worldwide!
THINGS I LIKED:
- I adore Adam Driver. He’ll win an Oscar someday. I really wanted him to win for his performance in the film Marriage Story, but Joaquin Phoenix definitely deserved the Oscar for what he accomplished in the movie Joker. Did you know Adam Driver was a Marine? He gets to use some of his weapons training in this movie.
- Ariana Greenblatt is such a little treasure and totally adorable. I think I first saw her in Love and Monsters, a movie I really enjoyed and highly recommend for its creativity and humor. She is a great, young actress with a very bright future in Hollywood.
- Some of the filming took place in the Kisatchie National Forest in Louisiana.
- Koa is a Hawaiian word used in the movie that means “warrior.”
- There are moments when you feel like you’re watching another Jurassic Park movie.
- The title gets its name from the fact that we get to see the earth 65 million years ago.
- The emotional heft is a bit cliched, yet still very effective, reminding us that family is everything.
- Very good and believable special effects and CGI.
- In a year slated to be filled with sequels and franchise additions, the fact that this movie is original is one of its strengths.
- Critics hate this movie, but I really enjoyed it!
- An interesting element of the film is that the two leads don’t speak the same language and have to figure out how to communicate in other ways.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- The plot is pretty simple, but that doesn’t make it a bad movie.
- Not enough dinosaur moments. A few of the dino scenes look like they’re straight out of Jurassic Park like when we see T-rex’s face slowly emerge from a dramatic waterfall.
- I would like to have seen more of Chloe Coleman in the film. She’s another young starlet who is fantastic. I loved her in My Spy.
- Sometimes, it’s hard to see what’s happening in the dark, cave scenes. They’ll be hard to see on small devices if you stream the movie.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- We see some blood and gore.
- Some dinosaurs die brutal, disgusting deaths.
- Violence
- We see some dead bodies.
- Kids will be excited to see some dinosaurs!
- There are some scary, intense moments that could frighten young children.
- People in perilous situations.
- Lots of destruction
THEMES:
- Survival
- Hope
- Communication
- Family
- Father/daughter relationships
- Time
