MOVIE TITLE: Cold Pursuit
RATING: R
LENGTH: 1 hour 58 minutes
Movie Review Mom GRADE: B
IN A NUTSHELL:
This action drama movie offers some unexpected dark humor and all the fun action you’d expect from a Liam Neeson flick. It’s actually a remake of the 2014 Norwegian film called, In Order of Disappearance [English Subtitled] In fact, this version was also written and directed by the same guy: Hans Petter Moland.
I’ve been a true Liam Neeson fan for years, even when some of his movies haven’t been that great. I just love watching him kick bad-guy butt with his “certain set of skills”, even if he has slowed down in recent years. He has announced that this is his last action film. I hope not. He’s awesome at revenge and vigilante movies.
This movie is best served cold.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Body count = 25.
- Very bloody and violent
- Talk of a heroin overdose. I just heard on the radio today that heroin deaths in the USA have been rising at an alarming rate. What the heck’s going on?
- People smoke marijuana
- Cocaine drug dealers
- Negative talk and cliched portrayal of Native Americans
- Two homosexual men kiss and hold hands.
- Gangs
THEMES:
- Pick a good road (path in life) and stay on it
- “Sometimes loyalty comes at a price.” – Mustang (Domenick Lombardozzi)
- Family
- Revenge
THINGS I LIKED:
- Beautiful snowy landscapes, supposedly in Colorado.
- Wow, that all-glass living room and dining room with views of the snowy outside. Beautiful.
- I liked that Liam Neeson’s character got tired and had to rest while killing the bad guys. It showed he wasn’t a trained assassin, but a regular guy. ha ha
- The faux fur all over the furniture at the Chateau hotel lobby cracked me up because it was so ridiculous.
- The title of the American movie, Cold Pursuit, is way better than the original. Considering this movie has a lot of dark humor, it subtly warns you that this movie should not be taken as a serious revenge movie, but more of a farce.
- I liked the Helly/Hansen’s snow coat that Liam Neeson wears. It’s a European brand that is probably super popular in Norway, where the original movie was filmed.
- Nicholas Holmes did a good job playing a likable, precocious boy.
- Music plays an interesting role in the movie.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- The squeaking gurney in the morgue was so painful to watch and hear. It’s an example of the dark humor early in this film.
- Lazy cop
- The villain (Tom Bateman) was more of a cartoon character than a realistic, scary man. He was just too over-the-top, but I suppose that was the point.
- The movie poster shows an image that never appears in the film. There IS something close, but not as awesome.
- After Act II, Liam Neeson kind of disappears and you don’t see him again until Act III.
- None of the women in the movie were very nice. Even the female cop who is trying to do the right thing gets her intel by stringing along an ex-boyfriend.
- Laura Dern doesn’t really get to do much.
- The movie trailer is a bit deceiving. It leads you to believe that it’s going to be a regular action/revenge drama, so a lot of people are surprised that it’s way less serious.
- FUNNY LINES:
* “Do you have any idea what I can do to you……on Yelp?” – Thorpe (Raoul Trujillo) - “Have you heard of the Stockholm Syndrome?” Ryan (Nicholas Holmes) after he gets kidnapped
INTERESTING LINES:
- I thought it was funny when the dad? Uncle? Gave the boy a copy of “Lord of the Flies” and said, “All the answers you’ll ever need in life are in that book.”
