A Madea Family Funeral

MOVIE TITLE:   A MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL

RATING:  PG-13

LENGTH:  1 hour 49 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:  D for really dumb

IN A NUTSHELL:   Audiences seemed to enjoy this final installment in the Madea franchise, although critics hated it.  A funeral, I suppose, is the perfect setting to kill off this Tyler Perry series.  The raunchy, abusive humor is not my cup of tea, which is why I gave it such a low score, but I know that there are a lot of Madea fans out there who will really enjoy this final send-off.

 TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • This movie was originally rated R, but then edited to be PG-13. A lot of the content is still Rated R, in my opinion.
  • Lots of crude jokes, bullying, threats
  • Profanity, 1 F-bomb, and the “N-word”
  • Talk of drugs.
  • Pre-marital hanky panky.
  • People don’t take responsibility for their actions
  • People are disrespectful to each other.
  • Lots of cleavage
  • Infidelity in and out of marriage
  • Lots of dishonesty

THEMES:

  • “You can’t choose your family. Family is all you got.” – Madea (Tyler Perry)
  • “Where there is injustice, you have to fight.” – Joe (Tyler Perry)
  • Infidelity will get you in trouble.  Ummm…duh.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • The best part of this franchise is Tyler Perry. He always plays a host of characters in these movies, including Madea, Joe, Brian, and Heathrow.  Heathrow is a new character who got the most laughs from the audience.  It made me laugh every time Madea would suddenly use her “man” voice at the end of a sentence.
  • The audience howled with laughter when they saw the Mike Tyson cameo performance.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Almost all of the characters act and look like cartoon characters.  I didn’t like most of them.
  • I can’t stand the constant bickering and smacking.
  • Disrespectful talk of the police and encouragement to break the law.
  • I didn’t like KJ Smith’s bossy, eye-rolling character (Carol).
  • The film was shot in less than a week. Quite a few critics say that it shows.

FUNNY LINES:
* “You know, in the animal kingdom, some species have both sexes.” – Brian (as he pointed to Madea)
