MOVIE TITLE:     Warhorse One

This action movie is now available to watch with a subscription on Peacock, rent or buy on Vudu, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime Video.

RATING:    R

LENGTH:      2 hours 6 minutes

MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE:  B-

IN A NUTSHELL:

A gunned-down Navy SEAL must guide a child to safety through a gauntlet of hostile Taliban insurgents and survive the brutal Afghanistan wilderness.

The film was directed by William Kaufman and Johnny Strong.  They both also wrote the screenplay!  Kudos to them.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • The actress who plays the little girl is absolutely adorable. She has super intense eyes that, at times, almost scare you though. ha ha  Her name is Athena Durner.  I’d love to see her again in another film.
  • There are some interesting camera angles and visual effects in Acts 1 & 3. Act 2 is very straightforward and traditional.
  • Beautiful cinematography.
  • It always drives me nuts in movies when people in gunfights don’t pick up guns or ammo on the dead bodies, especially when they know the fight is going to last a while, but in this movie, the main character actually does.  Finally!  That stuff is expensive!  ha ha
  • There is a sweetness underneath all of the violent warfare.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Some of the background music is distracting and annoying. At other times, it’s overly dramatic.
  • The wound makeup isn’t good, or consistent.
  • It’s convenient for the viewers that the protagonist never wears a helmet.
  • Most of the actors won’t be familiar to American audiences.
  • A lot of the edits are choppy.
  • There are some bad acting moments.
  • Sometimes, a film suffers when a single person writes it, directs it, and stars in it.  That’s the case with this movie.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Some profanity, including 1 F-bomb
  • Bloody violence
  • Murder
  • Deaths
  • Lots of firearms, grenades, knives, bombs, and other weapons

THEMES:

  • Fate
  • Survival
  • Family
  • Sacrifice
  • Patriotism

FUNNY LINES:

None.  The movie is very serious and dramatic.

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “Papa says guns don’t solve problems.” – Zoe Walters  (Athena Durner)
  • “If you’re intentionally killing innocent people, you’re the bad guys.” –  Master Chief Richard Mirko  (Johnny Strong)
  • “You’re my angel.” –  Zoe Walters  (Athena Durner)
