IN A NUTSHELL:
The story is about Gordon, a high school teacher in Brooklyn, who goes with his girlfriend, Sophie, to her hometown of Quebec City where she has been invited to test for the Michelin 3-star restaurant run by famous chef Ruby Collins, who turns out to be Sophie’s former lesbian lover.
The film was directed by James Woods and Nicolas Wright, who also wrote the screenplay.
Already, the film has been nominated for several awards from the Mammoth Film Festival.
THINGS I LIKED:
- It’s so great to see Zach Braff in something again. I loved him in the popular TV show “Scrubs.” Who didn’t love him in that?
- I also really love Vanessa Hudgens. She looks gorgeous in this, as always, and we even get to hear her sing a little bit in the film! Her “Princess Switch” Christmas movies are so cute. (You can see my latest review at https://moviereviewmom.com/the-princess-switch-switched-again-movie-review/ ) Her character in this movie is kind of like the spoiled cousin in those films.
- I’ve also really liked William Fichtner for years. I can’t believe he’s old enough to play an old man.
- I haven’t seen Charlotte Aubin in anything before, but I’m a new fan.
- We get to see a lot of beautiful food. You WILL get hungry while watching this.
- I spent all last year learning French on Duolingo, so it was fun to see how much of the French dialogue in the movie I could understand. Umm…not much! Ha ha
- We get to travel to Quebec, Canada and New York City in the movie.
- The waterbed cracked me up. I used to have one when I was a teenager.
- If awkward moments make you laugh, you’ll enjoy this.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- A lot of the humor doesn’t land.
- Act 3 wraps up very quickly.
- Some of the situations are absolutely ridiculous and too slapsticky.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Some profanity, including multiple F-bombs
- A lot of French is spoken without subtitles
- Lots of talk of intimate relations between unmarried couples, including a lesbian couple.
THEMES:
- Jealousy
- Love
- Relationships
- Family
- Competition
FUNNY LINES:
- “It’s not an immigration ploy! She’s my soulmate.” – Gordon Kinski (Zach Braff)
INTERESTING LINES:
None worth noting.
