IN A NUTSHELL:

The story is about five girlfriends who must fight for their lives in the middle of the ocean after a dream wedding excursion turns into a nightmare.

The film was directed by Hayley Easton Street.  Writing credits go to Cat Clarke.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • I had never seen any of these actresses in anything before.  They all did a fine job and include Hiftu Quasem, Lauren Lyle, Natalie Mitson, Nicole Rieko Setsuko, and Ellouise Shakespeare-Hart.
  • A “Breathe” app is used to help a lesbian deal with anxiety.
  • The resort where the wedding is supposed to take place looks beautiful.  Too bad we couldn’t spend the bulk of the movie there.
  • I love snorkeling.  Many years ago, I learned the important lesson of always snorkeling with a buddy for protection when I found myself alone in the ocean next to a shark!  I was terrified!  Thank goodness, it was just a harmless nurse shark, even though I didn’t know it at the time!
  • The wounds look pretty real.  The makeup department did a great job.  One thing I haven’t seen other shark movies do is make the characters look super sunburned and chapped like it’s shown in this film.
  • The film definitely ticks all of the diversity boxes if that’s what you’re looking for in a movie.
  • On the plus side, the sharks look very real.
  • The ending provided some needed character closure.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Adding nothing new or interesting to the genre, the film is pretty standard.  It has all of the usual tropes like girls in revealing bathing suits, and stupid characters making terrible decisions.  Shouldn’t the girls have, at least, started paddling in the right direction to shore?
  • I know it’s supposed to be cool and funny, but I REALLY hate it when girls try to act like foul-mouthed frat boys who are obsessed with partying and sex.
  • The characters throw in conversations about global warming and how humans are destroying the planet.  I hate being preached at in movies.
  • The title is pretty uninspired.  The audience sees a shark in the water early on and the 5 girls figure it out pretty quickly.
  • The girls are really mean toward one another, even before all of the chaos ensues.  Then, they start yelling and throwing blame at each other.  How are these girls even friends?
  • Sadly, the character I liked the most was the first one to die.  Drats.
  • The movie poster is good but doesn’t accurately portray anything we actually see in the film.
  • There were so many items the girls could have grabbed off the boat before it sank.  They could have used them in creative ways to make the plot more interesting.
  • This would have played better in July during Shark Week, right?
  • It’s really hard to see what’s happening in the night scenes.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • The first scene of the movie shows a girl getting beat up by homophobe bullies because she’s a lesbian.
  • Profanity, including a million F-bombs
  • Young women are in dangerous situations.
  • Blood and gore
  • We see people die.

THEMES:

  • PTSD
  • Friendship
  • Wedding
  • Forgiveness
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Critical thinking
  • Survival and the will to live

FUNNY LINES:

  •  “If it does come back again, you need to punch him in the nose or in the eyes or the gills, okay?  My dad always wanted us to be prepared.” – Lizzie  (Lauren Lyle)  “Prepared for a shark attack in Manchester?” – Meg  (Hiftu Quasem)   “He just thought with global warming, it was only a matter of time.” – Lizzie  (Lauren Lyle)
  • “Look after these idiots, will you?” –  Lizzie  (Lauren Lyle)

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “Why should she get a free pass from Panicsville?  We’re all in the same F’n boat here.” – Cam  (Nicole Rieko Setsuko)
  • “Diets are for losers.” – Cam  (Nicole Rieko Setsuko)
