MOVIE TITLE: Weekend in Taipei
This new action film releases in theaters on November 8, 2024.
RATING: R
LENGTH: 1 hour 41 minutes
Movie Review Mom GRADE: B
IN A NUTSHELL:
The story is about a former DEA agent and a former undercover operative who revisit their romance during a fateful weekend in Taipei, Taiwan.
The action film was directed by George Huang. He also co-wrote it with Luc Besson.
THINGS I LIKED:
- I’ve been a big fan of Luke Evans for years. He’s convincing in action movies, comedies, and even musicals!
- Other cast members include Sung Kang, Lun-Mei Gwei, and Wyatt Yang.
- We get to spend time in Taipei. I’ve been to Asia many times, but still haven’t had the opportunity to visit Taipei yet. What a fantastic location for an exciting film.
- We also get to spend a couple of minutes in Paris. I was just there last summer!
- We see some gorgeous cars, particularly a Ferrari. Sadly, a lot of them crash and get destroyed.
- Many of the fight sequences are humorous and well choreographed.
- The soundtrack is a lot of fun.
- You might get a kick out of a fight scene in a movie theater. A Zhang Yimou martial arts movie plays on the screen while two men fight in front of it. An old lady in the audience asks, “Is this a 3D movie?” ha ha
- Shoutout to the Marriott hotel.
- There is a lot of humor, which shows the movie is self-aware and doesn’t take itself too seriously.
- Keep watching during the final credits for some cute photos that tell you what happens next.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- It’s super convenient that everyone in Taipei speaks English. Ha ha
- Some of the scene transitions were super choppy.
- Some of the acting isn’t very good.
- Some of the stunts made me laugh out loud because they were so ridiculous. Cool, but ridiculous.
- Most of the characters are unrelatable.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Lots of violence with blood and gore.
- A young boy gets beat up by adults
- Profanity
- Very high dead body count
- Lots of weapons of various kinds.
- Some Mandarin and Taiwanese Hokkien are spoken without subtitles.
THEMES:
- Family
- Drugs
- Secrets
- Money and power
- Corruption
FUNNY LINES:
- “It’s a good thing we’re married.” – Kwang (Sung Kang) “Is it?” – Joey (Lun-Mei Gwei)
- “Mom, anything else you want to tell me about our family?” – Raymond (Wyatt Yang)
INTERESTING LINES:
- “Sometimes, it’s easier to forget the past.” – Joey (Lun-Mei Gwei)
- “My past is mine, not yours.” – Joey (Lun-Mei Gwei)
- “You don’t get to judge my choices.” – Joey (Lun-Mei Gwei)
