IN A NUTSHELL:
The movie was adapted from Richard McGuire’s 2014 graphic novel of the same name. The film reunites the director, writer, and stars in the movie Forrest Gump: Robert Zemeckis, Eric Roth, Tom Hanks, and Robin Wright!
The story is about several families who inhabit the same house over generations, and the many moments of their lives.
Already, the movie has been nominated for various awards such as “Best Time Capsule” and “Best Intergenerational Film”.
THINGS I LIKED:
- Tom Hanks. I’ll watch anything with him in it. He’s so fantastic in everything he does.
- Robin Wright also does a great job.
- The entire cast is terrific and includes Michelle Dockery, Jonathan Aris, Beau Gadsdon, Ophelia Lovibond, Kelly Reilly, and Paul Bettany (I adore him), among others.
- The de-aging effect is incredible! We see a few actors turn old too. Tom Hanks and Robin Wright looked like they were back in Forest Gump!
- I liked the idea of showing a piece of land and the people who inhabited it over centuries, experiencing life’s big and small moments.
- If you enjoy history, you’ll get a kick out of watching the time periods come and go.
- It’s really fun to see the changing technology, cars, entertainment, music, fashion, and décor.
- I’ve always been fascinated by one-location movies. They did a great job showing the passage of time, all from one room.
- It was sobering to see the Black father teach his son how to handle the situation if/when he ever got pulled over by a cop.
- The camerawork and filmmaking is terrific. The entire movie is filmed from a camera that stays in one place the entire time (mostly).
- The movie did a great job balancing sadness with joy.
- The ending brought tears to my eyes.
- The musical score by Alan Silvestri is so lovely, especially at the end of the film. It drips with nostalgia and melancholy.
- The camera only pans out at the end of th movie to show us other areas of the house, reminding us that our perspective changes throughout our life. The film definitely
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- The timeline goes back and forth in time, which might be a bit confusing at the beginning of the film, but then you quickly understand what’s happening. There are frames that come and go on the screen, identifying exactly where something happened in the room.
- Not all of the characters and families are given equal time on the screen. Perhaps, that represents how long they spent in the house.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Kids will be bored. So will some adults.
- A baby falls off an ottomon, which is horrifying (but thankfully, looks like CGI)
- Some profanity
- Some alcohol
- Talk of a “premarital relationship” that results in pregnancy
THEMES:
- Time flies
- Nostalgia
- Family
- Aging
- Marriage
- Life’s ups and downs
- Procrastination
- Living life to the fullest
FUNNY LINES:
- “There’s so full of life!” – Rose (Kelly Reilly) “Yeah? How long they been married?” – Al (Paul Bettany)
INTERESTING LINES:
- “You always find a reason not to do something.” Margaret (Robin Wright)
- “Time sure flies.” – Richard (Tom Hanks)
- “I’m here.” – Margaret (Robin Wright)
- “All I did was worry about every dxmn thing. In some insane way, I must have believed that worrying would keep painful things from happening. Isn’t that ridiculous?” – Richard (Tom Hanks)
- “We did the best we could.” – Margaret (Robin Wright)
- “You will have an adventure” (Margaret reading a fortune cookie “And what an adventure it has been.” – Margaret (Robin Wright)
