MOVIE TITLE:    Flight Risk

This action/crime/thriller movie is now playing in theaters, as well as on Fandango at Home.

RATING:    R

LENGTH:   1 hour 31 minutes  (Mel Gibson’s shortest-directed film)

Movie Review Mom GRADE:    C

IN A NUTSHELL:

The story is about a pilot who transports an Air Marshal who is accompanying a fugitive to trial.  As they cross the Alaskan wilderness by air, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem.

The film was directed by Mel Gibson.  Writing credits go to Jared Rosenberg.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Lots of profanity, including F-bombs
  • Violence
  • Blood and gory wounds

THEMES:

  • Talk of crimes
  • Witness transport
  • Courage
  • Tenacity

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Mark Wahlberg was off-the-charts craze-balls in this movie. He was the one who suggested his character be bald. Hilarious. He shaved his head rather than wear a bald cap. The poster got me because I’m such a Mark Wahlberg fan. Mel Gibson stated that Wahlberg improvised a ton of his character’s dialogue. Apparently, they had to cut a lot of the “really sick” comments he made. It’s the first time Wahlberg has played a villain since the 1996 movie Fear.
  • The fantastic cast also includes Michelle Dockery and Topher Grace, who both did a good job.  The three of them looked like they were having a blast.
  • We also hear the voices of Leah Remini, Paul Ben-Victor, Eilise Patton, and Monib Abhat.
  • There is some comedy and a lot of tension.
  • It had to have been difficult to film in such a tight space in a Cessna airplane.
  • The title is perfect and has a double meaning.
  • There are some twists and a little mystery which help to provide some substance to the plot.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • I expected a lot more from Mel Gibson. He stated that he wanted the movie to just be a fun thriller for entertainment’s sake, but it could have been much better.
  • The trailer gives away the first half hour.
  • The writing isn’t very good. The movie kind of felt like a dark comedy than a real thriller.
  • Topher Grace’s character bounces from being hysterical to cracking jokes, which seemed odd.
  • The makeup on various wounds looked terrible and super fake.

FUNNY LINES:

  • “If you don’t take off these cuffs, you’re going to be the one who has to do the paperwork.” –   Winston  (Topher Grace) when asking to use the bathroom
  • “Honestly, I’d rather be on Spirit Airlines.” –  Winston     (Topher Grace)
  • “I do this for fun. I do this for free.” –    Daryl    (Mark Wahlberg)
  • “We like our pilots crispy.” –   Winston   (Topher Grace)

INTERESTING LINES:

  •   None worth noting.
