IN A NUTSHELL:
This charming and surprisingly emotional mystery comedy follows a flock of clever sheep who try to solve the sudden, mysterious murder of their beloved shepherd, George (played by Hugh Jackman). Every night, George would read detective novels to his flock, completely unaware that they understood every single word! When tragedy strikes, the herd must leave the safety of their meadow and cross into the baffling, complicated world of humans to bring the killer to justice. Think Babe meets Knives Out!
The film was directed by Kyle Balda. He has directed 4 other projects, but this is his first live-action feature film! Already, the movie has won the 2026 “Truly Moving Picture Award” by Heartland Film!

TIPS FOR PARENTS:
-
Thematic Elements: The plot centers around the murder of a shepherd, meaning grief, death, and loss are prominent themes that might make sensitive children cry.
-
Peril & Violence: Some tense moments involving threat, brief violence, and minor coarse language.
-
Overall, it is a very wholesome and heartfelt family movie, but be prepared to talk to your kids about handling grief after the death of a loved one.

THEMES:
-
Grief and coping with the loss of a loved one
-
Justice and community
-
Looking past appearances (don’t underestimate anyone or any sheep!)
-
The complexity of human behavior
- Memories
- Stereotypes
- The importance of names

THINGS I LIKED:
-
The Outstanding Voice & Live-Action Cast: Hugh Jackman is wonderful as always, and the star-studded voice cast, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Patrick Stewart, Sir Patrick Stewart, and Emma Thompson. The voice talents give these sheep so much personality! Other cast members include the talented Nicholas Galitzine (I loved him in Amazon Prime’s musical Cinderella), Nicholas Braun, Hong Chau, Molly Gordon, Tosin Cole, Chris O’Dowd, Bella Ramsey, and Regina Hall.
-
The Emotional Depth: Screenwriter Craig Mazin (known for much darker projects!) brings a beautiful, tender emotional core to this movie that will have both kids and adults sniffling.
-
The Animation: The CGI sheep by Framestore are beautifully rendered, cute, and expressively fluffy without losing their animal nature.
-
A Genuine Mystery: It’s not just “dumbed-down” entertainment; it’s a well-thought-out, offbeat whodunit that keeps you guessing. I thought it was clever to describe the potential murderer as types of sheep.
- The Humor: It’s often subtle, always funny, sometimes punny and slapstick, clever, and entertaining!
- Fun British trivia: The twin rams are named Ronnie and Reggie, as a nod to the infamous Kray twin brothers who led organized crime in London’s East End during the 1950s and 1960s. A lot of the filming was done in a charming village called Ivinghoe near Buckinghamshire, England. The landscaping is idyllic.
- We get to see all kinds of cute sheep breeds.
- Religion: The conversation the sheep had about God was cute. God is a shepherd, but also a lamb, but also…
- Little details like the sheep cloud at the end are so touching and sweet.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
-
Pacing and Tone Shifts: The movie oscillates between incredibly silly animal jokes and heavy conversations about mortality and grief, which can feel a bit jarring for younger kids.
-
Human Characters: The sheep are so entertaining that whenever the film shifts focus heavily to the human suspects, you kind of just want to get back to the pasture.
-
Nicholas Braun’s accent felt a little inconsistent across a few scenes. He’s actually an American!

FUNNY LINES:
-
“Why did the chicken cross the road? To flee the crime scene, obviously!” (The chicken crossing the road jokes were adorable.)
-
“We are sheep! We follow! We don’t interrogate!”
- “He was a vegetarian. I can forgive that in a woman, but in a man…disgusting.”

INTERESTING LINES:
-
“If there’s one secret to happiness in my life, it’s taking care of the kindest creatures on earth: sheep!” — George Hardy
“I like to pretend that they follow along, but they’re only sheep.” — George Hardy
“Our shepherd was murdered! And we shall solve the crime!” — Lily
“It hurts. Remembering hurts.” –
“It’s our memories that keep the ones we love alive.” –
