IN A NUTSHELL:

The Isolate Thief is a gritty, slow-burn, winter Western that leans heavily into tension and atmosphere. While it echoes the structural DNA of The Hateful Eight, it carves out its own path, thanks to a fierce lead performance and an incredibly chilling villain.

Set in the bitter-cold winter of 1865, the film follows Adeline Horn (Mackenzie Foy), a resourceful teenager left alone to “man” a remote, snowbound Union Army outpost after the death of her father. Isolated from the rest of the world, Adeline’s quiet survival is upended when a massive stash of stolen gold unexpectedly falls into her lap.

Enter a brutal gang of outlaws posing as the very Union soldiers Adeline has been waiting to relieve her. Led by the charismatic but terrifying Fiddler John (Sean Bean), the gang is hunting down a graverobber named Burial Perry Parker (Joe Pantoliano) to reclaim their gold. What follows is a high-stakes, claustrophobic psychological chess match as Adeline attempts to protect a fellow captive, Emily (Odeya Rush), and outwit a house full of ruthless killers who drastically underestimate her.

The film was directed beautifully by John Suits. Screenwriting credits go to Kevin Lefler.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • This film is not appropriate for children.

  • Bloody, gory, violent deaths.

  • Violence against women.

  • Talk and portrayal of a prostitute’s “services”.
  • Some profanity, crude language, including 1 F-bomb.

THEMES:

  • Survival

  • No honor among thieves
  • Greed
  • Betrayal
  • Courage

THINGS I LIKED:

    • Mackenzie Foy’s Gritty Rebrand: Shedding her Disney and Twilight roots, Foy delivers a powerhouse performance. She plays Adeline with a quiet, steely determination, carrying the emotional weight of the film effortlessly as she navigates a den of wolves…the animal kind and human. Her dinner prayer was profound.

    • Sean Bean’s Menacing Turn: Ditching his usual heroic fantasy personas, Sean Bean is spectacular here as a menacing villain. Deploying a calculated, icy Texan drawl, his transition from a seemingly warm, comforting military leader to a cold-blooded psychopath is one of the film’s biggest highlights. He’s fantastic.

    • The Atmospheric Setting: Director John Suits turns the frozen, desolate outpost into a character of its own. There is no talking for the first 5 minutes, allowing you to sink into the setting. The gorgeous cinematography emphasizes the absolute isolation; the ground is so frozen solid that graves can’t even be dug—perfectly mirroring the bleak, inescapable trap Adeline finds herself in.

    • Tension galore: The writing and direction offer a constant sense of tension throughout the entire movie. Often, what is NOT seen is as terrifying as what is shown on the screen.
    • Girl Power: Women and girls will be happy to see a female protagonist who doesn’t faint or cry in danger. Adeline has some serious grit underneath her delicate, young frame.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • If you are walking into the theater expecting an action-packed gun-slinging Western from the jump, you might find the pacing a bit testing.

  • Screenwriter Kevin Lefler opts for a very slow, dialogue-heavy buildup to establish the psychological warfare between Adeline and Fiddler John.

  • While the tension is pulled tight, the film does occasionally bog down in its middle act before exploding into a relentless, violent final 35 minutes.

  • It’s a bit predictable.

FUNNY LINES:

  • None. This is a true drama.

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “It’s two girls against 4 cold-blooded killers.” –  (Mackenzie Foy)      “Who told you I’m not cold-blooded?” – (Odeya Rush)

  • “I am the Lord’s right hand!” – (Sean Bean)
