Wild Rose movie review

posted in: Drama, Musical | 1

MOVIE TITLE:     Wild Rose

RATING:   R

LENGTH:    1 hour, 41 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:  A-

IN A NUTSHELL:

Jessie Buckley appears to be a real “star is born” actress. BAFTA named Jessie Buckley as one of their Rising Stars this year.  After you’ve seen the movie, you’ll understand why.

The movie is directed by Tom Harper, written by Nicole Taylor, and made of the heartache country songs are made of.  Just like a rose, the movie is beautiful with some thorns.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Within the first 4 minutes, a young woman drops an F-bomb, you see a naked man’s rear end, a sex scene, and people smoke a joint.
  • Profanity and F-bombs.
  • A young woman gets out of jail but behaves very badly outside of prison.
  • Rose-Lynn tells some nice kids in their school uniforms that they look like they’re something out of The Shining.
  • A kid gets hurt and goes to the hospital.
  • Alcohol

THEMES:

  • Making your dream come true.
  • “You’ve got a voice, so what do you need to say?” – Neil MacColl (as himself)
  • Responsibility
  • Family & Parenting

THINGS I LIKED:

  • I thought it was cute when Rose-Lynn was cleaning the house and the band appeared around her to accompany her in her imagination.
  • Jessie Buckley was born in the same county in Ireland where they screened the movie in Ireland.
  • You get to hear some great country music.
  • Rose-Lynn’s dream is to get to Nashville.  My husband and I went last year for a conference and were wowed by the main street where you can hear fantastic performers every 20 feet you walk.  Such great entertainment.

  • I got to spend a few days in Glasglow, Scotland a few years ago and was so impressed with the city.  The people were delightful, although I couldn’t always understand what they said.  ha ha   My sister, nephew, and I stayed in a Home Exchange home that belonged to a lovely woman whose husband was an artist.  Their large apartment was filled with his beautiful paintings and located next door to some botanical gardens.  She took us on long walks around the university, museums, and gardens.  I would have loved to stay longer to explore. By the way, we have been members of Home Exchange for many years and have had great experiences.  We have saved thousands of dollars over the years because we stay in people’s homes for free!  Sometimes the house is empty just for us, but sometimes we stay with the homeowners and have made so many new friends all over the world.  You should check our Home Exchange and even stay in my house!

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • It’s really hard to understand the super thick Scottish accent. It’s charming, just hard to understand.
  • We all love an underdog, but it’s tough to watch a selfish, single mother neglect her children.
  • FUNNY LINES:
  • “It’s just country…not country/western.” – Rose

INTERESTING LINES:

  • ”There’s no talent of folk that can sing.” – Marion (Julie Walters)
  • “Why country?” – Susanna  (Sophie Okonedo)

“Because there’s 3 cords and the truth.” – Rose

  •  “I wanted you to take responsibility.  I never meant to take away your hope.” – Marion
  • “May all your heartbreaks be songs and may all your songs be hits.” – front desk receptionist at the Drake Motel in Nashville (Sondra Morton)
