21 Bridges movie review

IN A NUTSHELL:

Produced by the Russo brothers, this is a classic cop-killer, shoot-em-up thriller.  If you’re in the mood for a violent detective movie that’s pretty predictable, you’ll enjoy it.  Everyone else will be pretty bored.

While it doesn’t add anything new to the genre, it gets the job done.  It’s solid.  It’s just not great.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

• Kids will be extremely bored. It’s rated R anyway and they shouldn’t see all of the violence and be exposed to the zillion F-bombs and profanity in the movie.
• Lots of shooting with deaths with some gore, splatter, and pools of blood.
• LOTS of guns and shooting.
• You see two men with their shirts off.

THINGS I LIKED:

• Chadwick Boseman is fantastic, as always.  Long live Wakanda!
• The rest of the talented cast includes Sienna Miller, Stephan James, Keith David, Taylor Kitsch, and J. K. Simmons.
• New York City is always such a great backdrop and character in cop movies.
• The movie is directed by award-winning Brian Kirk, who worked on a lot of the Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season (DVD) episodes, so some of the scenes are shot really well.
• The most engaging scenes for me were when Chadwick Boseman and Stephen James were on screen together.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

• Boring within minutes.  Forgettable within minutes.
• Super cliched and generic characters
• Lots of people standing around talking
• Corny music that made the movie feel like a Film Noir.  Don’t get me wrong; I like Film Noir!  It just didn’t seem to fit with this movie.
• I actually heard people in the audience laughing.  Considering this is a drama, that doesn’t bode well for this film’s success.
• Predictable twist.
• One of the movie posters says, “In a city on lock-down, he’s the only avenger they can count on.”  That’s a clear reference to Chadwick Boseman’s character as Black Panther (2018)(Plus Bonus Content) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Is that legal?  The fact that they’re hoping to cash in on that franchise could be considered a shot at humor or a desperate attempt to attract an audience because the movie can’t stand on its own merits.  The other actor from an Avenger movie is Taylor Kitsch in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Theatrical).
