MOVIE TITLE:  STARDOG and TURBO CAT

RATING:  PG

LENGTH:      1 hour, 30 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:   B

IN A NUTSHELL:

Headgear Films presents a family-friendly animation written and directed by newbie Ben Smith.   It’s now available on DIRECTV Cinema before it arrives in theaters and Video On Demand on June 19, 2020.

Here’s a tool that might help with your DirecTV:

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Somebody’s underwear gets stuck on a lunch box.
  • Kids will get a kick out of the differences between cats and dogs.
  • One of the characters says “Dangit”.  Other than that, language is clean.
  • Some cartoon violence and creatures in perilous situations.
  • The adults in the town believe that they can’t trust animals.  Talk to your kids about whether or not you think that’s true and in which circumstances.
  • Click here to download some fun activity sheets for your kids that go with this movie.
  • Parents might need to explain what the deal is with cats and catnip.

THEMES:

  • Home
  • Friendship
  • Teamwork
  • Heroism
  • The bond between humans and their pets
  • Time Travel
  • Treatment of animals
  • Magic

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Great music
  • Beautiful animation with cute details.
  • If you’re a fan of Back to the Future, you’ll get a kick out of the square in Glenfield.
  • Some of the humor actually made me laugh out loud.
  • The voice talents include Luke Evans, Nick Frost, Gemma Arterton, Bill Nighy, and new TikTok sensation Charli D’Amelio.
  • Bullion the goldfish has some pretty funny lines and visual humor.  He’s voiced by Ben Bailey Smith

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • There are some things in the plot that are never fully explained.  For example, the movie never explains exactly why humans in the present day hate animals so much.
  • Not all of the humor lands.
  • The plot doesn’t make much sense.  A lot of exposition scenes are required to explain what’s going on.
  • The cute-face gag overstays its welcome.
  • Most parents will be willing to sit and watch this movie with their kids, but after about 20 minutes, they’ll be eager to wash the dishes or do some other chore.

FUNNY LINES:

* “Anything purple is high class.” – TurboCat

  • “Buddy, can you summarize?” – TurboCat        “Woof!” – StarDog
