MOVIE TITLE: DEEP
This dramatic thriller airs exclusively on Netflix on July 16, 2021
RATING: PG-13
LENGTH: 1 hour 41 minutes
IN A NUTSHELL:
The film is produced by Transformation Films and is an intriguing Thai film. I love that Netflix has been introducing us all to a lot of foreign films. The movie is directed by a team of people. Many of those same people also wrote the movie.
Four insomniac med school students are lured into a neuroscience experiment that spirals out of control — and must find a way out before it’s too late. The premise is especially interesting because our physical state absolutely affects our mental state.
THINGS I LIKED:
- The opening scene definitely grabs your attention.
- The cast includes Thai actors most Americans will be completely unfamiliar with. The English voiceovers are mostly good, although there are some bad moments.
- You get to experience a little bit of Thailand and see some delicious Thai food. I would have loved more!
- The movie tells the story of a bunch of medical students. My nephew is currently in med school and agrees that not getting enough sleep is a big problem among the student body.
- You’ll learn a lot about insomnia.
- Fun fact: A medical student is told she’ll earn 100,000 Thai Bahts, which is the equivalent of 3,112.74 U.S. dollars.
- There are twists. I love twists!
- You can tell it’s a recent movie because one of the characters says, “I don’t have Covid. I swear!” and you see a taxi driver wear a mask.
- It was interesting to see the contrast in personalities and values that showed how each of the students chose to spend the money they earned by participating in the study.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- Some people might be annoyed by the dubbed English.
- You see some written Thai with no translations.
- Some of the acting isn’t very good.
- The 4 medical students spend time coming up with their unique group name in a long scene but then they never actually use it during the entire rest of the film.
- Acts 1 & 2 are interesting, but the story takes a ridiculous turn in Act 3 and the film unravels. There’s a ton of exposition in Act 3 to explain the crazy plot.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Kids will be bored.
- There is talk of sleeping around and getting an abortion
- Talk of getting a boob job.
- There’s a lot of alcohol.
- Some profanity, including 1 F-bomb.
- You see medical students working on cadavers. I did that in college too. The smell of Formaldehyde is disgusting.
THEMES:
- Suicide
- Insomnia and getting enough sleep
- What would you do for money?
- What are you willing to do for love?
- Friendship
- Responsibility
- Support
- Choices
