Red Notice movie review

MOVIE TITLE:   Red Notice

This fun action movie is available exclusively on Netflix.

RATING:  PG-13

LENGTH:  1 hour 58 minutes

IN A NUTSHELL:

Written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, this entertaining heist flick is a lot of fun, as long as you turn your brain off.  Seriously, only watch this movie if you’re in the mood to laugh and not look for a plot that makes a lot of sense.  While film critics point out all of the flaws in the film, audiences have been getting a big kick out this popcorn, buddy movie.

When an Interpol-issued Red Notice the highest level warrant to hunt and capture the world’s most wanted goes out, the FBI’s top profiler John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) is on the case. His global pursuit finds him smack dab in the middle of a daring heist where he’s forced to partner with the world’s greatest art thief Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) in order to catch the world’s most wanted art thief, “The Bishop” (Gal Gadot). The high-flying adventure that ensues takes the trio around the world, across the dance floor, trapped in a secluded prison, into the jungle, and, worst of all for them, constantly into each other’s company.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • What do you get when you combine Deadpool, The Rock, and Wonder Woman?  This goofy movie. The three charismatic stars do what they do very well.  In that regard, they’re type-cast.  We get exactly what we’re expecting out of them.  No surprises.  Even still, the characters are likable and enjoyable.
  • At the end of the rolling credits, you hear Gal Gadot’s character say, “Don’t miss me too much.  Ta Ta!”
  • Some good set-pieces.
  • Lots of amusing action, although it’s nothing we haven’t seen before.  There is definitely an Indiana Jones vibe.
  • There are some twists.
  • There is some entertaining banter between the three leads.
  • You get to travel all over the world.
  • I love the few comments that prove the film is self-aware.
  • Yep, Netflix is hoping viewers are going to fall in love with these characters because the story ends with a lead-in for a sequel.  Is that something you’d like to see?  Comment down below!

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • The writing is sloppy.  The plot is messy.
  • There are characters and situations that are poorly constructed and ridiculous.
  • There’s a scene with a bull that has terrible CGI.
  • Lots of exposition scenes.
  • Lots of tropes and cliches.
  • How do you feel about movies with Ryan Reynold’s product placement?  Yep, this movie has it!
  • The movie drags a little bit in the middle, making it feel a little longer than it should.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • People in perilous situations.
  • A lot of profanity and even an F-bomb.
  • Violence
  • While we see a lot of people get shot at, we don’t see anyone die on the screen.

THEMES:

  • Competition
  • Friendship
  • Trust
  • Greed

FUNNY LINES:

* “It’s amazing we both didn’t turn into prostitutes.” – Nolan Booth   (Ryan Reynolds)

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “It doesn’t matter what you do.  It only matters what they think you’ve done.” – Nolan Booth  (Ryan Reynolds”
