MOVIE TITLE: A Quiet Place: Day One
This prequel thriller is now playing in theaters, as well as on Fandango at Home.
RATING: PG-13
LENGTH: 1 hour 40 minutes
Movie Review Mom GRADE: B
IN A NUTSHELL:
The story is about a terminally-ill woman named Sam who finds herself trapped in New York City during the early stages of an invasion by alien creatures with ultra-sensitive hearing.
John Krasinski wrote and directed the first two movies in this franchise. This time, Michael Sarnoski directs the movie with writing help by John Krasinski and Bryan Woods.
My expectations were VERY high for this one because I loved the first two films in the franchise so much. Sadly, I was a bit disappointed and even bored at times. I hope John Krasinski and Emily Blunt will be more involved in the next one…if there is another one. Rumor has it that he had written a long story sequence when he first came up with the original idea. He is soooo doggone talented and seems like such a nice guy in real life!
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- We see massive destruction in New York City. We see some images that are reminiscent of 911, so consider that fair warning in case you might be triggered by that.
- Some profanity
- People are in dangerous situations
- Scary aliens attack people
THINGS I LIKED:
- The cast includes award winners like Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, and Djimon Housou. We see Djimon Housou in A Quiet Place 2!
- As expected, the sound design is very good.
- Cute cat with interesting markings! The cat’s name is Frodo and her owner is Sam (Samantha). As a huge Lord of the Rings fan, I got a kick out of that.
- Yeah, sometimes I’m that obsessed with pizza too, but New York style is not my favorite. I’m more of a Chicago deep dish girl.
- Some of the CGI is extremely good.
- One thing about this movie and the other two in the franchise is that it makes you really aware of the sounds you make while watching the film!
- There are some jumps and scares that will get ya!
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- We don’t really get to know the main characters very much before all of the aliens attack and everything goes crazy, so we don’t feel connected to them for quite a while.
- It started feeling like a Cloverfield movie in the beginning because we don’t really get to see the aliens up close for a long time. We have to wait 53 minutes before we see one close-up. I was hoping for some bigger insights into who they were and why they came to earth, but we don’t get much new information.
- While A Quiet Place 2 added to the story and our understanding of the aliens, this new feature doesn’t give us anything groundbreaking.
- Shouldn’t there be a LOT more people wandering around New York City? At the very least, we would see a lot of dead bodies after the aliens attacked, but the city looked kind of like a ghost town. Today, the population is 8.8 million.
- The musical score is good but not as powerful as what was used in the first two films.
THEMES:
- Survival
- Sacrifice for others
- Critical-thinking skills
- Friendship
- Hope
- Courage
FUNNY LINES:
- “You can’t have a cat in here.” – Store owner “It’s a service cat.” – Sam (Lupita Nyong’o)
INTERESTING LINES:
- “It’s the end of days. No more people. No more New York. No more nothing.” – Survivor
