Movie Title: Alpha Grade: B+
Rating: PG-13, 97 minutes
In a Nutshell: I read somewhere that people who talk to their dogs are more intelligent than those who don’t. If you have a dog, do you talk to him/her? Of course you do! This movie is a new take on a boy and his dog 20,000 years ago in Europe.
The acting and cinematography make this simple story charming.
Tips for parents:
- Animal cruelty and death. I’m so glad we just have to go to the grocery store and not have to hunt our food.
- There isn’t much dialogue. When the people talk, it’s in a foreign language, sometimes with no subtitles. When there are subtitles, they show up very fast.
Uplifting theme:
- “When there are no more leaders to follow, you must become one.” – Alpha movie poster tagline
- Tenacity
- Family
- Man’s best friend
- Survival
Things I liked:
- Beautiful cinematography and gorgeous images.
- Very well directed by Albert Hughes.
- I was touched by how the boy’s mom hugged him goodbye with so much emotion, as her hands squeezed him tighter and, for a second, you could see her cherish the moment. I feel that way every time I have to say goodbye to my sons.
- The actors did such a great job expressing their emotions that it didn’t matter that they didn’t speak in English. The talented cast includes Kodi Smit-McPhee, Natassia Malthe, Leonor Varela, Johannes Haukur Johannesson, and Mercedes de la Zerda.
- Fantastic CGI.
- The first game of fetch. Ha ha
- One of the reviews on IMDB made me laugh out loud. The review was entitled “Paleo Diet: The Movie.”
Things I didn’t like:
- The trailer pretty much shows you what is going to happen.
- Many of the scenes occur at night, so this will be a hard movie to watch on a computer screen when the film comes out on DVD or digital download.
- It’s a bit slow-moving.
- Simple plot.
