MOVIE TITLE:     Beast

This man vs. nature action movie releases on August 19, 2022.

Not to be confused with the other movie that came out this year also called “Beast.”  The other one is an Indian action comedy.

RATING:    R

LENGTH:      1 hour 33 minutes

MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE:  C

IN A NUTSHELL:

This story is about a father and his two teenage daughters who find themselves hunted by a massive rogue lion intent on proving that the African Savanna has but one apex predator.

The movie was directed by Icelander Baltasar Kormakur.  It was written by Ryan Engle and Jaime Primak Sullivan.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Fans of Idris Elba won’t be disappointed.  He works hard and gives a strong performance.
  • Other cast members include Sharito Copley, Iyana Halley, and Leah Jeffries.
  •  Lots of foreshadowing if you’re paying attention to the details.
  •  A lot of the CGI is really impressive.
  • We get to travel to Africa and see the wildlife.
  • Predictable jump scares.  Still fun though.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • There are a LOT of night scenes and they’re all pretty dark, so it’ll be hard to see what’s going on if you watch this on a small device when streaming.  Try to see it on the biggest screen you can.
  • I’m so tired of snarky, stupid, entitled teenagers in movies.
  • Some elements are just silly like when someone outruns a lion.  Yeah, right.
  • It’s so annoying when characters do stupid things.
  • Some of the CGI isn’t that great.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Some profanity
  • You see dead and wounded bodies
  • People are in dangerous situations
  • Various weapons are seen and used

THEMES:

  • Death of a loved one
  • Survival
  • Mourning/grief
  • Nature
  • Animal Kingdom
  • Poachers
  • Family

FUNNY LINES:

None.  It’s mostly a serious drama.

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “This is so back in the day.” – Norah Daniels   (Leah Jeffries)
  • “I have a rainbow of emotions, okay.” – Norah Daniels (Leah Jeffries)
  • “I don’t know what to do.” –  Dr. Nate Daniels    (Idris Alba)
