MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE: B
IN A NUTSHELL:
This family-friendly flick was directed by Lisa Arnold. Screenwriting credits go to Ariel and Trey Fernald, who also co-produced it with others.
It has already earned 22 wins from various film festivals, as well as 5 nominations. Congrats to the team!
THINGS I LIKED:
- The cast does a good job and includes Mark Christopher Lawrence, Leigh-Allyn Baker, Isabelle Almoyan, Grey Acuna, and more. Tank and Raejon Jones are a father and son in real life who both make appearances in the film. Taylor Cole was hilarious. Those piercing, blue eyes!
- The actor you’ll most likely recognize is Dean Cain who said about the film, “This is a wonderful way for families to get together, to be together, and to love on each other.”
- Gabriel C. Brown has such a gorgeous voice! I could have listened to him all day. He also did some really cute voice impressions.
- This isn’t a musical, but there are some musical “moments” that are really nice. We get to hear songs from “For King & Country” and Ryann Darling.
- The Jewish accents of Joseph’s and Mary’s parents were hilarious and made me laugh out loud every time.
- There is a lot of humor mixed in with the dramatic moments to provide a nice balance. Some of the jokes are a cute wink to parents.
- So many holiday movies focus on Santa Claus, so it’s nice to have a Christmas movie that reminds us of CHRIST.
- If you’re Christian, you can find material for group discussions, sermon notes, Bible study guide, and a memory activity for families at https://bringingbackchristmasmovie.com/media/
- Ultimately, the movie is very family-friendly and teaches some important lessons for adults and children.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- At the 30-minute mark, the story completely changes tone by taking the modern-day protagonist back in time to the Nativity story.
- There are some bad acting moments that make the film feel pretty low-budget.
- Some of the editing moments are a bit rough.
- Not all of the jokes land.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Some Spanish is spoken without subtitles
- Adults drink some alcohol
- Some adults argue
- Nothing offensive
- No profanity
- A child is seriously ill
THEMES:
- Knowing God has a purpose for your life
- Patience
- Anger
- Getting laid off from work
- The birth of Jesus Christ
- God is with you during the challenges in life
- Gratitude
- Money vs. people
INTERESTING LINES:
- “The only one who can throw away your future is you.” – Carmen (Talia Alanis, who has won an award in her supporting role)
