MOVIE TITLE: DC League of Super-Pets
This animated action movie was released in theaters and on VOD on July 29, 2022
RATING: PG
LENGTH: 1 hour 46 minutes
MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE: B-
IN A NUTSHELL:
Krypto the Super-Dog and Superman are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime side by side in Metropolis. However, Krypto must master his own powers for a rescue mission when Superman is kidnapped.
THINGS I LIKED:
- The fantastic voice talents come from an incredible cast that includes Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon, Vanessa Bayer, John Krasinski, Keanu Reeves, David Diggs, Olivia Wilde, Ben Schwartz, Dascha Polanco, Natasha Lyonne, Diego Luna, Jameela Jamil, Lena Headey, Keith David, and more!
- Speaking of Vanessa Bayer. Rumor has it that she would often wear Wonder Woman’s cape and tiara while in the recording studio during her voiceover sessions. Cute.
- And speaking of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, he voices Krypto the dog in the DC Universe, as well as Black Adam in the live-action movie coming out soon! Keep watching during the final rolling credits for a sneak peek of Black Adam and the pet that was specially designed for him in this movie.
- Cute snoring transition and others.
- It was a sweet visual to see Superman “walking” his flying dog while trying to wake up.
- Wouldn’t it be incredibly awesome to fly to Paris just for a pastry like Superman and his dog dig?
- I loved the ice cream container called “Cryers”, illustrated next to one of the characters who was having a pity party. Ha ha
- DC Comics superheroes Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, Green Lantern (a woman), Batman, and the Flash are all featured in the story.
- The movie pays homage in a few scenes to the 1978 Superman with Christopher Reeve. I love that version.
- The ending is actually really sweet when certain animals are paired up with superheroes.
- There’s a touching musical backstory about one of the other characters.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- Lex Luther is too much of a mafia spoof to be taken as a serious threat. The guinea pig in the story is eviler than him. His accent also changes.
- Everyone seems to have superpowers in this movie except for Lois Lane.
- For absolutely no reason, a character suddenly gets his superpowers back. That’s convenient, lazy writing.
- All of a sudden, one of the characters breaks the 4th wall for no reason, something he only does the one time.
- Another film critic mentioned this movie undermines the integrity of the DC universe. I agree.
- Not all of the humor lands.
- The animation style is much less sophisticated than what we’re used to seeing these days.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- The “S” word and an F-bomb are bleeped out.
- Disgusting poop, fart, and zit jokes.
- Lots of destruction and chaos
- Animated violence with superpowers
THEMES:
- Man’s best friend
- Jealousy
- Believing in yourself
- Friendship
- Loyalty
- Teamwork
- Heroes
- Courage
- Pets
