IN A NUTSHELL:

Fifteen years after her “happily ever after” in the original Enchanted movie, Giselle questions her happiness, inadvertently turning the lives of those in the real world and Andalasia upside down in the process.  The film was directed by Adam Shankman.  The screenplay was written by Brigitte Hales with story writing by J. David Stem and David N. Weiss.

I had such great hopes for this long-awaited sequel.  Even though this movie was in development since 2010, it felt like it still needed time to work on it some more.  The worst criticism about this movie is that of the three of us who were watching the movie together, we ALL fell asleep.  Admittedly, we were all tired when we started watching the movie.  In all fairness, I really need to watch this again.  If I change my score, I’ll let you know.  What did YOU think of the movie?

THINGS I LIKED:

  • The returning and talented cast includes Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, and Idina Menzel.
  • I’ve loved Amy Adams in all of her movies.  She has done a great job stretching her acting chops over the years.  You can see her real-life husband and daughter in the town square scene.
  • Maya Rudolph made for a fun villain.
  • There are plenty of Disney movie Easter eggs in the film such as three women dressed in pink, blue, and green like in Sleeping Beauty’s fairy godmothers, and the sweeping broom in Fantasia.  Look for Belle’s and Snow White’s dresses in the dress store.  You’ll see nods to famous scenes in Aladdin, My Fair Lady, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and so many more!
  • There is plenty of singing, dancing, and magic.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Amy Adams has red hair in real life, so why did she wear a wig?  She also had a voice double for some of her songs by LC Powell.  Why?
  • Some of the DGI looked surprisingly bad.
  • The script is messy and chaotic.
  • I was disappointed that we didn’t get to hear Idina Menzel sing more.  Come on!  It’s Idina Menzel!  I wish they hadn’t given her bangs.
  • Ultimately, seeing the lovely Giselle grow older and bored with her life isn’t something many of us want to see.  Instead, we want to see whimsy and magic because many people want to watch a movie to escape their own life that they’re bored with.
  • A lot of the humor doesn’t land.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • The movie is family-friendly, but will probably appeal more to Millennials who grow up watching the original and fell in love with the characters.
  • Some bullying is portrayed
  • Fighting with various weapons

THEMES:

  • Bullying
  • Sarcasm
  • Unhappiness
  • Peer pressure
  • Community
  • Power
