MOVIE TITLE: Dog
This touching movie is currently in theaters nationwide
RATING: PG-13
LENGTH: 1 hour 41 minutes
IN A NUTSHELL:
Congratulations to Channing Tatum for his directorial debut. He teamed up with Reid Carolin, who also co-wrote the screenplay. The story is about two former Army Rangers who are paired against their will on the road trip of a lifetime. A troubled Army Ranger vet is tasked with taking Lulu (a Belgian Malinois) down the Pacific Coast to get to a fellow soldier’s funeral on time.
THINGS I LIKED:
- Women are in love with Channing Tatum and men want to be like him. Now, toss in a dog and you’ve got a great buddy combo that will make you go, “Awww.” He does a really great job and shows us some impressive range.
- One of my sons is in the Army, so I always feel connected to movies that illustrate the sacrifices our soldiers make.
- The trick with the shoestring breaking a zip tie actually works. I’ve tested it before!
- It’s cool to see what these trained dogs can do when they go hunting for some criminals.
- You get to see some beautiful west coast ocean views.
- I got a kick out of Kevin Nash when he was on screen.
- Dogs truly are special. Do you have one? Which breed do you have? We had a sweet little black and white Papillon, but he passed away last year. I cried for weeks.
- Kids will get a kick out of their shenanigans.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- Not all of the comedy lands. In fact, it feels like the movie hasn’t decided yet if it’s a comedy or a drama. The trailer makes it look more like a comedy, but it really is more of a drama, peppered with some humor. In other words, the tone shifts quite a bit.
- Some of the dialogue is weak.
- The entire time, I was wondering why he didn’t just fly to the destination.
- Act 3 went by quickly.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- There is a saucy scene between a man and two women but it doesn’t
- Two men suck on drug-induced lollipops
- A guy flips the bird.
- Some profanity
- You watch a man go through drug withdrawal
THEMES:
- Redemption
- Healing
- Bonds
- Animals
- Respect
- Service to country, soldiers, Rangers
- PTSD and mental health
- Broken people and broken animals
INTERESTING LINES:
- “No one owns Mother Earth.” – (Channing Tatum)
