Doors movie review 2021

MOVIE TITLE:     DOORS

Available on Video on Demand March 23rd and home video April 6, 2021

RATING:   R

LENGTH:      1 hour 21 minutes

IN A NUTSHELL:

Epic Pictures describes the movie this way:  Without warning, millions of mysterious alien “doors” suddenly appear around the globe. In a rush to determine the reason for their arrival, mankind must work together to understand the purpose of these cosmic anomalies. Bizarre incidences occurring around the sentient doors lead humanity to question their own existence and an altered reality as they attempt to enter them.

The concept sounds cool, but after 30 minutes into the movie, it just felt like the nonsensical script was written by people who were on a drugged-out high.  My review is going to save you time and money: don’t waste your time or money on this one.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Josh Peck is the only actor I recognized in this bizarre film.
  • The movie is divided into different parts that are sort of tied together with a narrator (David Hemphill) who attempts to advance the timeline so that we understand how things have progressed.
  • Some beautiful cinematography.  Some of the images look like they came straight out of city streets during Covid-19’s quarantine when people weren’t out and about.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • The movie looks like a low-budget film with inexpensive actors.
  • There are some really bad acting moments.
  • The look and tone of the movie shift dramatically from one segment to another because each segment is led by a different director.
  • There were some interesting visuals, but they could easily be achieved with iron and magnets by kids in elementary school.
  • You see words on the screen, which are supposed to be the aliens talking.  Either someone on the production crew forgot to use Spell-check or the advanced aliens can’t spell correctly.
  • None of the four segments feel complete or make you feel satisfied that you have more information, making the entire film seem pointless and disappointing.
  • The trailer and movie poster are deceiving.
  • The writing portends to be deep and insightful, but the movie just isn’t.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • The F-word appears on a sweatshirt as soon as the movie starts.  You also hear it spoken many times.
  • Two girls kiss.
  • Kids will actually get bored.  So will adults.
  • People die, usually by guns.

THEMES:

  • Humanity
  • Hope
  • Friendship
  • Exploration
  • Sanity

FUNNY LINES:

  • “Why does everything you’re saying have to sound super scary?” –  Jake  (Aric Floyd)
  • “Okay. You’re a weirdo and you’re crazy.  It’s official.” –    Jake   (Aric Floyd)

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “Poor rocks.  How do they stand it for so long?” –    Becky   (Lina Esco)
  • “It’s time to refresh.” – a door
  • “Does it hurt, you hiding behind your image?  Does it hurt you not having control now?” – Dr. Price
  • “Embrace your new reality.” – Dr. Price
