MOVIE TITLE: Fantasy Life
This sad comedy is now playing in theaters and on Fandango at Home.

LENGTH: 1 hour 31 minutes
Movie Review Mom GRADE: B-

IN A NUTSHELL:
Directed and written by Matthew Shear, who also stars in the film, Fantasy Life is a quirky, indie romantic dramedy that explores the messy intersection of mental health, privilege, and the search for identity. The story follows Sam Stein, a law school dropout suffering from frequent panic attacks, who takes a job babysitting for his therapist’s grandchildren. While navigating his own anxieties, he develops an unexpected emotional connection with the children’s mother, Dianne, an actress stuck in a stalling career and a strained marriage.
Already, the film has 3 wins and 2 nominations from various film festivals.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
-
Language: The film is rated R primarily for its frequent use of profanity, including multiple F-bombs.
-
Mature Themes: There are references to sexual content, marital infidelity, and clinical depression. There is also some talk about Judaism, the Holocaust, and suicide.
-
Substance Use: The movie includes scenes featuring brief drug use and alcohol consumption.
-
Emotional Weight: The film deals heavily with anxiety and existential crises, which might be heavy for younger viewers.

THEMES:
-
The Discrepancy of Reality: The central theme is the “fantasy” people build for themselves to cope with the disappointment of their actual lives.
-
Mental Health and Neurosis: The film highlights how anxiety and depression can paralyze even those living in a world of intellectual and financial privilege.
-
Symbolism of the “Stalled Career”: Dianne’s acting career serves as a symbol for her lost sense of self; she watches her old films as a way to visit a “fantasy” version of herself that no longer exists.
-
Babysitting as a Metaphor: Sam’s role as a babysitter symbolizes his own arrested development—he is a forty-something man looking after children because he hasn’t yet learned how to look after his own adult life.
- Broken dreams

THINGS I LIKED:
-
Performances: Amanda Peet delivers a career-best performance, bringing a grounded vulnerability to a character that could have easily felt like a caricature of a “sad rich woman”. Matthew Shear gives a believable and awkward performance that will make you uncomfortable to watch.
-
Specific Setting: The film does a great job capturing the very specific, neurotic energy of New York intellectual life and the quiet isolation of Martha’s Vineyard. It’s helpful to see the title cards that indicate the time of year (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer) as we move through the story.
-
Dry Wit: While the subject matter is heavy, the dialogue is filled with a self-deprecating, Jewish-cultural humor that keeps the tone from becoming too bleak.
-
Strong Supporting Cast: The entire cast is fantastic and also includes Bob Balaban, Alessandro Nivola, Judd Hirsch, Andrea Martin, Zosia Mamet, Jessica Harper, and Holland Taylor. Legends like Judd Hirsch, Bob Balaban, Andrea Martin, and Holland Taylor add a lot of texture and legitimacy to the family dynamics.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
-
Meandering Plot: At times, the film feels like it “just exists” without a clear narrative drive, which might frustrate viewers looking for more traditional stakes. Audiences may feel annoyed with how the movie ends.
-
Unlikable Protagonist: Sam is designed to be awkward and “nerdy,” but his lack of ambition and slightly voyeuristic interest in Dianne can make him hard to root for.
-
Editing Gaps: Some reviewers noted that the editing feels “slapdash” in places, with characters appearing and disappearing without much explanation.

FUNNY LINES:
-
“I’m an antisemitic Jew… as if that’s a personality trait.” – Sam (Matthew Shear)
