IN A NUTSHELL:

The story is about a rock star who tries to get away from it all after a failed comeback album.  He escapes to a dreamy Mediterranean island, only to discover that his new cliffside home has an unfortunate notoriety that attracts unwanted visitors and an old flame.

The film was written and directed by Stelana Kliris.  I really enjoyed it!

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Harry Connick Jr. does a great job in this.  I love that we get to hear him sing too!
  • We’re introduced to the talented Ali Fumiko Whitney.  She has a lovely voice and some solid acting chops too.
  • The title takes on a new meaning only minutes into the film when we see someone walk off a cliff to commit suicide.  EEK!  Then, we get additional levels of meaning in Acts 2 and 3.
  • The movie takes place in the Mediterranean island of Cypress.  We get immersed in its culture in the film. This is the first movie to be filmed in Cyprus for Netflix
  • We get to see some delicious-looking food in Cypress.  It all looked great except for the snails.  Ick.
  • We get to hear some lovely music.
  • It was refreshing to watch a rom-com that wasn’t like all the others where two people meet, initially hate each other, then fall in love, then have a crisis, then fall back in love again.  I really liked that there was history already between the couple and the movie gave us layers to their relationship.
  • The movie illustrates how blood is thick and we need to love and support our family, especially through tough times and mistakes.
  • I thought the very last scene was so sweet.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • It’s hard to feel sorry for a rich celebrity at the beginning of the movie.
  • I’ve read reviews from people who said the movie has family values, yet one of the earlier scenes shows a woman in church talking about how she hooked up with a guy the night before.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Kids will be bored.
  • The first words we hear are profanity.
  • We hear a lot of Greek spoken with subtitles.  We learn a Greek swear word within the first few minutes.
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Alcohol
  • Two unmarried girls get knocked up

THEMES:

  • Fame and celebrity
  • Connection
  • People who make an impact on our lives
  • Lost love
  • Forgiveness
  • Trust
  • Independent women
  • Friendship
  • Sacrifice
  • Motherhood
  • Suicide
  • Giving others hope
  • Choices and consequences

FUNNY LINES:

  • “A woman like you shouldn’t be on the shelf.” – Petro  (Antonis Katsaris)     “Sometimes, the shelf is easier.” – Sia  (Agni Scott)
  • “This is stupid.” – John   “No, it’s not.  It’s romantic.” –  Melina  (Ali Fumiko Whitney)  “Well, the two are often confused.” – John  (Harry Connick Jr.)

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “Music isn’t a career but a way of life.” – Melina  (Ali Fumiko Whitney)
  • “Who needs therapy when you have nature.” – Captain Manoli  (Toy Demetriou)
  • “Music is the love of your life.” – Sia  (Agni Scott)
  • “Falling is involuntary.” – John (Harry Connick Jr.)     “So, you don’t jump in love?” –  Sia (Agni Scott)   I loved the conversation of falling vs. jumping in love.  It really does take a leap of faith to allow yourself to be vulnerable and open up your heart to someone.
  • “I didn’t want to give up on my dreams just to follow yours.” – Sia  (Agni Scott)
  • “This is not a good day to die!” – John  (Harry Connick Jr.)
  • “You never gave your heart to someone else.  You never risked the pain of togetherness.  Being on your own is easy.  Being with someone is hard.” – Grandma
