IN A NUTSHELL:

Violinist Finley Sinclair travels to an Irish coastal village to begin her semester studying abroad. At the B&B run by her host family, she encounters the gregarious and persistent heartthrob movie star Beckett Rush.   Violinists will love this dramatic romance based on the book called There You’ll Find Me: The book that inspired the movie “Finding You,” in theaters May 14, 2021 by Jenny B. Jones.  The charming movie by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions is directed by Brian Baugh.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • First of all, we get to go to Ireland!  My husband and I had planned our first trip there last year but it was canceled due to Covid.  We both have some Irish heritage and we were looking forward to the trip so much.  While we continue to wait for the world to open up again, we’ve been watching lots of YouTube videos and taking an online course about the country.  You really get that magical taste of the beautiful country in this movie.  Check out my travel blog post I wrote about a lovely Irish Claddaugh ring I was recently given.
  • You also get to hear some fun Irish music.  I don’t drink alcohol but I’m super excited to check out the Irish pub scene where people gather to play music and have a pint together.  One of the items that has been on my Bucket List for many years is to not just go to Ireland but to sing with drunk Irishmen in a pub!  I’m totally serious!  I love the way movies portray the neighborhood pub and hope they’re really like that.
  • I’ve never seen Jedidiah Goodacre in anything before and yes, that’s his real name!  He has starred in Legacies: The Complete First Season and Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina: Season One (Original Score).  In this movie, he plays an actor in a “Dragon Slayer” show that looks like Game of Thrones: Complete Series [Blu-ray] which was actually filmed, partly, in Ireland!
  • The lovely Rose Reid plays Finley Sinclair, a college student who goes to Ireland on a Study Abroad trip.  When I was in college, I did a Study Abroad semester in Spain and absolutely fell in love with that country.  That’s when I really got hooked on travel because I got to tour many of the European countries while I was there.  I returned to Spain a few years later to live for 1 1/2 years.  It will always be a big part of my heart.  Travel truly can be life-changing.  I even ended up getting a degree in International Relations because of my travels abroad.
  • Fun fact #1: Rose Reid knew how to play the violin before doing the movie, but she definitely had to refine her skills for this movie.
  • Katherine McNamara looks like a young movie star in her role as a young movie star.
  • Fun fact #2: Tom Everett Scott played a character nicknamed “Shades” in the fun movie That Thing You Do!.  When we first see his character in this movie, he’s wearing shades.  It was great to see him again.
  • I love the dad’s apron that says “Real men make flaky pie crust.”
  • If you enjoy watching dramatic romances on the Hallmark Channel, then this movie is right up your alley.
  • I was worried that the movie would be very shallow after Act 1, but it actually deepens as it builds.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • There is a lot of wooden dialogue and bad acting moments.
  • Super duper predictable.
  • Super tired, cliched relationship that starts with a character who doesn’t like the other one.
  • Sometimes it’s hard to understand what some people say because of their thick Irish accents.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Irish profanity like “shite”.  No “American” profanity.
  • Some kissing
  • Talk of abuse
  • A drunk man is homeless but well-loved by the villagers

THEMES:

  • Celebrity
  • Being true to who you are
  • Finding inner peace
  • Living a double life
  • Judging others
  • Making your own choices
  • “Things aren’t always as they seem.” – Finley Sinclair   (Rose Reid)
  • “Being here in Ireland has taught me to look deeper.” – Finley Sinclair   (Rose Reid)

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “Arrogance makes me grumpy.” –  Finley Sinclair   (Rose Reid)
  • “Some people mistake confidence for arrogance.” –   Beckett Rush   (Jedidiah Goodacre)
  • “So, you manipulate his love life and his career?” –  Finley Sinclair      “His love life IS his career.” –   Sean Callaghan    (Ciaran McMahon)
  • “You have to learn to play the sorrow and the joy.  They’re linked.” –  Seamus    (Patrick Bergin)
  • “Sometimes things aren’t always as they seem.” –  Beckett Rush   (Jedidiah Goodacre)
