IN A NUTSHELL:
The story is about two old friends who reconnect on a desert camping trip instead of attending their high school reunion. One of them hopes to harness a fabled vortex in the area so he can make a hit movie about it. The other wants answers about his alien abduction.
The movie was directed by Zach Green, who also co-wrote it with Devin O’Rourke. They both also star in the film. Already, the movie has won 2 film festival awards, including Best Feature Film and Best Performance by a Duo!
THINGS I LIKED:
- The movie starts off with images of Blockbuster Video tapes, which instantly takes you back in time. Ultimately, the film feels like a respectful and whimsical homage to the Sci-Fi movies of the 80s and 90s.
- Everyone in the cast feels like a real person you probably know in real life.
- Zach Green and Devin O’Rourke have terrific comedy timing.
- The banter between all of the characters is amusing and ridiculous.
- There’s a lot of talk about looking for a vortex. Have you ever felt one? I did when I went to Sedona, Arizona a few years ago! It’s famous for having many vortices in the area. My husband and I were open minded and even went on a Vortex tour where the guide showed us the most popular spots. In this movie, we see a guy use “divining rods”, which is what our tour guide gave us. I always thought it was a lot of hooey, but those rods really did work! Crazy, wild stuff!
- I got a kick out of listening to the two guys talk about movies, plots, and titles. The Kevin Bacon movie Tremors is mentioned quite a bit. Have you seen that goofy flick? Do it!
- The cinematography is pretty good and captures the beauty of the desert.
- I’ve seen several versions of the movie poster designs and I really like them all.
- I have a feeling that the audience that will respond the best to this quirky film will be stoners and drunk bros who are hanging out with nothing else to do or alien hunters who don’t mind laughing at themselves.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- The action is a bit thin, as the characters make dumb moves and choices.
- It definitely feels like a low-budget indie film because it is. Even still, it’s enjoyable and a very good first shot at a feature film for the writers and director.
- I thought with a name like “Foil” that we would eventually see someone wearing a foil hat. Right? That seemed like an obvious missed opportunity just for fun.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Profanity, including many F-bombs
- Lots of alcohol and drunk people
- Guns and knives are used
- People are in perilous situations
- There is talk of a porno movie
THEMES:
- Friendship and supporting each other’s goals
- Aliens
- Supernatural forces
- Nostalgia
- Filmmaking
INTERESTING LINES:
- “There’s something so American about heading West, you know?” – (Devin O’Rourke) What’s funny is they actually drive east on their road trip. Ha ha
- “Most people are sleepwalkers in a strange land.” – (Chris Doubek)
