IN A NUTSHELL:

Forgotten Fortune is a heartwarming film about a retired mailman with dementia, who claims he saw a murder, but no one believes him. They also don’t believe he has a “forgotten fortune” somewhere…

The film was directed by Stevie Fernandez, who also wrote the screenplay with Mark Sherwood. The movie was filmed in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which has great incentives for filmmakers to come to the city!

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Kids will be extremely bored.
  • Knives and guns are seen.
  • We see a man getting beaten up, and another man dead on the bathroom floor.
  • It’s discovered that an unmarried, older couple had intimate relations.
  • No profanity. I loved it when a character said, “What the heck!” because that’s what I say, sometimes.”  ha ha

THEMES:

  • Aging

  • Memory loss and dementia

  • Purpose

  • Family unity

  • Friendship
  • Loyalty

THINGS I LIKED:

  • The setting is charming and looks like real life, not some Hollywood set.

  • It was nice to see “the original Hulk” Lou Ferrigno, Jimmie (“JJ” Dyno-Mite!) Walker, Mark Sherwood, and Brian Shoop again. It has been years since I’ve seen them in anything that I almost didn’t recognize them without their names on the poster. They all looked like they were having a blast making this.
  • Mark Sherwood looked like he should be Lou Ferrigno’s son instead of Brian Shoop’s son! Mark and his wife served as producers of the film, as well as acting in it.
  • The film is sweet and easy.
  • There’s a cute twist in Act 3.
  • I absolutely related to the characters in the movie because my mother died from Alzheimer’s. I lost all 4 of my parents in one year. I know the pain of watching beloved parents age and lose their strength and vitality. Managing parents with dementia is heartbreaking.
  • I really like that the film brings awareness of dementia. At the end of the movie, we see these words on the screen: “One in nine people age 65 and older has Alzheimer’s Disease. Early diagnosis can help preserve independence longer.” Additional facts about dementia are shared on the screen, as well as the National Dementia Helpline: 1-800-272-3900.
  • The film also gives a shoutout to caregivers on another card that states, “Caregivers of dementia patients provide over 16 BILLION hours of unpaid care each year.”
  • Keep watching for more clips during the rolling credits.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Some of the acting wasn’t very good.

  • Some dialogue feels robotic.

  • The music is a bit melodramatic.
  • Sometimes, it’s hard to understand what some of the actors say.
  • The pacing is quite slow.

Dumb LINES:

“Ah, man! I knew this was a bad idea!” – dumb criminal

INTERESTING LINES:

“Safe ain’t the same as being seen, Mags.” – Brian  (Brian Shoop)

“What matters is how you show up now.” –  Leo  (Lou Ferrigno)
