MOVIE TITLE: Hubie Halloween
RATING: PG-13
LENGTH: 1 hour, 42 minutes
Movie Review Mom GRADE: C+
IN A NUTSHELL:
I was wondering if we were going to get a new Halloween movie this year! I was in the mood to watch something fun like Hocus Pocus or Goosebumps when I stumbled across this movie on Netflix. Interestingly, Hocus Pocus and HUBIE HALLOWEEN both take place in Salem, Massachusetts.
For some perspective, Adam Sandler said he was going to make a real stinker of a movie if he didn’t win an Academy Award for his movie Uncut Gems last year. Not only did he not win, but he was completely snubbed for a nomination. So, is this the terrible movie he promised to make? Some say it is; others who love Adam Sandler movies disagree. Know this going into it: this is a classic Adam Sandler movie, so that should let you know what you’re in for.
Great ready to put on your Covid-19 mask for Trick or Treating! Here’s one that would be perfect, eh?
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Disgusting barfing
- Lots of bullying
- Like all of Adam Sandler’s movies, there are a ton of crude jokes and visual gags
- Candy etiquette. It’s a thing!
- People are so rude to each other.
- There aren’t any super scary things, but young kids might be frightened by certain images.
THEMES:
- Kindness
- Accepting people for who and what they are
- Revenge
- Friendship
- Forgiveness
THINGS I LIKED:
- If you’re an Adam Sandler fan, you might get a kick out of knowing that his daughters in real life are in the movie. Ray Liotta’s real-life daughter, Karsen Liotta, is also in the movie.
- The star-studded cast also includes Kevin James, Maya Rudolph, Tim Meadows, Michael Chiklis, June Squibb, George Wallace, Kenan Thompson, Shaquille O’Neal, Colin Quinn, and it wouldn’t be an Adam Sandler movie without Rob Schneider!
- Ben Stiller is awesome. Sadly, he’s only in the movie for less than a minute! He appears to reprise his role as Hal from the movie Happy Gilmore.
- Fans of Modern Family: Season 1 (I Loved that show!) who miss Julie Bowen, will love seeing her in the movie, especially because her character loved Halloween so much in the popular TV show. She and Adam Sandler both starred in the movie Happy Gilmore. I don’t know why, but Adam Sandler loves to give his love interest in most of his movies the initials VV. One thing I like about Adam Sandler is that he seems to always reward his friends with spots in his films.
- Steve Buscemi is always hilarious. Would you believe this is actually the 4th time he has played a werewolf in a movie? The other 3 movies were from the Hotel Transylvania trilogy.
- While most of the humor is juvenile, I readily admit that my 4 sons would have loved this movie when they were younger.
- Kevin James. Need I say more? Who doesn’t love Kevin James?
- Last Fall, my husband and I flew to Maine and New Hampshire to celebrate the changing of the leaves. It was gorgeous there and the small town of Salem, Massachusetts where this movie takes place reminded me of some of the quaint towns we saw there.
- The movie is dedicated to Cameron Boyce, who was going to be in the movie, but he passed away last year. He had worked with many of the actors in the movie before, such as Adam Sandler’s original Grown Ups and its sequel.
- If you’re familiar with all of Adam Sandler’s movies, you’ll be able to spot the many Easter eggs that are references to other characters and places in the other films.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- Adam Sandler basically plays the same character in every movie. In this movie, he uses his classic dumb voice but sometimes you can’t even understand what the heck he says because of his mumbling.
- My biggest complaint about Adam Sandler’s movies is how crude they are. This film is no different.
- I never heard Rob Schneider say, “You can do it!” Did I miss that?
