Grade: B
Rating: PG-13, 105 minutes
In a Nutshell: Despite its terrible score on Rotten Tomatoes, Melissa McCarthy is fantastic and offers an entertaining comedy that will probably be enjoyed more by middle-aged moms than any other demographic.
Tips for parents:
-
- The film shows a couple who is divorcing and how it affects the family.
-
- There is a LOT of college partying going on. She is told, “You’re in college now and you need to learn how to party through it.” That’s not the best advice you want your kids to hear.
-
- LOTS of alcohol, drugs, and pre-marital relations.
Uplifting theme:
-
- The importance of education
-
- Make your dreams come true
-
- Don’t give up on yourself.
-
- Friendship: Support your friends and family.
-
- Mother/daughter relationships.
Things I liked:
-
- I love her enthusiasm for school. My kids still think I’m a nerd because I actually like school. I thought it was cute when she breathed in the smell of a new textbook. I used to always do that to. The aroma of knowledge!
-
- LIFE OF THE PARTY was written by Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone.
-
- I thought the sisterhood aspect of the film was really sweet.
- All of the characters experience growth.
- The movie addresses the emotional fallout from a divorce. My parents were divorced when I was in elementary school and my siblings and I all experienced it differently and still do.
Things I didn’t like:
- It doesn’t dig deep enough.
- It portrays college as an endless quest for parties, rather than knowledge.
- It makes it seem like everyone sleeps around and it’s no big deal. It IS a big deal. The mom is portrayed as an old-fashioned, conservative, stay-at-home mom, yet within minutes of being on campus, she becomes a slut.
Funny lines:
-
- ‘I’m a little snackish.” – Deanna/the mom (Melissa McCarthy) Yeah, me too…like always.
-
- “I’m so worried about the math skills in this room.” – Deanna
-
- She got me in the biscuits!” – Deanna
Interesting lines:
-
- “I guess we’re still doing this –girls being mean to each other for no apparent reason.” – Deanna (Yeah! What’s up with that? Why are girls so mean to each other? Why do they have such low self-esteem that they have to trash other girls to feel better about themselves? C’mon, girls! Knock it off! We need to support each other! Don’t you think that would be so much better?)
- “Us ladies got to stick together.” – = Christina Aguilera
