MOVIE TITLE: Like a Boss
RATING: R
LENGTH: 1 hour, 23 minutes
Movie Review Mom GRADE: D for Don’t watch this trash
IN A NUTSHELL:
If you watched the trailer and thought it made the movie look trashy, you’re wrong. It’s way worse than the trailer. This movie is garbage and offensive in so many ways. In movie terms, the humor in this movie is BLUE. That means very inappropriate. It’s raunchy and vulgar from the very first sentence in the movie. Why do women have to be portrayed that way to prove they can be powerful in business? Written and directed by men, this cringe-worthy gal-pal comedy showcases female empowerment gone wrong. Women deserve so much better.
January movies are notoriously horrible and Like a Boss is perfect for a January release.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- SUPER crude, crass, vulgar, and tasteless
- The protagonists are complete immature skanks
- Inappropriate comments about President Obama and his family
- TONS of jokes about sex
- Tons of profanity and F-bombs
- Gay man and homosexual jokes
- Lots of drugs, smoking, alcohol
- An inappropriate baby shower cake
- Bullying
- Racial slurs
THEMES:
- “Shine from the inside out.” – Mia (Tiffany Haddish)
- Friendship, Girls Night
- Working women vs. stay-at-home moms
- Business smarts
THINGS I LIKED:
- The friendship between Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne’s characters was believable with pretty good chemistry.
- Billy Porter was really funny. I wish he had been given more screen time. He says that Arugula is called Rocket in Europe. It’s true. Weird, right?
- I loved the moments when the women were supportive of each other and pointed out each other’s strengths and beauty. The world is tough enough, so why don’t women support each other more like that?
- I liked the approach that Mel and Mia took in their makeup line: to accentuate the beauty that is already there in a woman, rather than just pile on makeup.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- All of the characters are exaggerated cartoons of people.
- Tiffany Haddish is over-the-top but steals the scenes when next to Rose Byrne. Their filmography is full of raunchy movies and this film is no exception.
- The humor is low-brow, in the gutter, and just stupid. I’m trying to think of more words to describe the opposite of clever and classy.
- Mia and Mel have a makeup company whos biggest seller is a “One-Night Stand” product. So classy.
- The musical numbers are really bad.
- The film is full of exposition.
- Shark Tank would be appalled at how these women ran their businesses.
- There is ZERO representation of women who are strong and virtuous.
FUNNY LINES:
- “I would express more shock but I’ve had so much Botox.” – friend (Jessica St. Clair)
INTERESTING LINES:
- “Quality is what we do.” – Mia (Tiffany Haddish)
- “We shouldn’t feel guilty because we’re putting our careers first. We’re just acting like men.” – Mia
- “Money changes everything. And if it doesn’t, I will.” – Claire Luna (Salma Hayek)
- “Nothing will change in your company until you change.” – Claire Luna
