This psychological drama is now playing on Netflix.
RATING: R (suggested – for mature themes, language, and intense subject matter)
LENGTH: 2 hours, 18 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:
B-

IN A NUTSHELL:
After the Hunt is a tense, thought-provoking drama that explores power, morality, truth, and the consequences of past decisions. Julia Roberts delivers a commanding performance as a respected figure whose carefully constructed life begins to unravel when accusations and long-buried secrets surface. This is not a feel-good movie; it’s heavy, uncomfortable at times, and designed to spark conversation rather than provide easy answers.
The film was directed and produced by Luca Guadagnino. Writing credits go to Nora Garrett.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:
This film is aimed squarely at adults. It deals with serious themes involving accusations, ethics, abuse of power, sexual assault, and moral ambiguity. There is strong language and emotionally intense material that may be disturbing for teens. Parents should preview or research carefully before considering this for older adolescents.

THEMES:
- Accountability and truth
- Power dynamics
- Moral gray areas
- Consequences of silence
- Reputation versus reality
- Truth
- Relationships
- Friendship
- Trust
- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies

THINGS I LIKED:
- Academy Award winner Julia Roberts gives us a layered performance that will surely generate some Oscar buzz.
- Strong writing avoids simple heroes and villains.
- There is a slow-burning tension that keeps you engaged the entire time.
- The film raises meaningful questions about justice and responsibility.
- Excellent supporting performances. The entire cast is fantastic and includes Andrew Garfield (Oscar nominee), Michael Stuhlbarg, Chloe Sevigny (Oscar nominee), and, of course, Ayo Edebiri.
- The film is supposed to take place on and near Yale University in Connecticut. In the movie, we can see several New Haven landmarks. Julia Roberts played another university professor at Yale in the movie Mona Lisa Smile! The prologue says, “It happened at Yale.” I wonder how the Ivy League school feels about this film!
- Some of the dialogue is pretentious, yet entertaining and delicious.
- The director, Luca Guadagnino, is known for creating emotions that simmer below what is happening in a scene. We see this in spades in this film, too.
- How do you feel about the title of the movie? What do you think it means? Comment down below!

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- The heavy subject matter may feel overwhelming to many viewers.
- The slow pacing may not appeal to everyone.
- Some moments feel intentionally ambiguous, which may frustrate audiences wanting clear resolution.
- Some of the dialogue was ridiculous, pompous, and even infuriating at times.
- By the end of the film, so many questions remain unanswered.
- In Act 1, everyone talks about how brilliant Ayo Edebiri’s character is. Her comments in class appear to back up the teachers’ respect for her. Then, by Act 3, she has become a cliche of an emotional victim at the mercy of her circumstances.
- All of the relationships among the characters are complicated, often inappropriate, and extremely uncomfortable.
- The cinematography is creative but often distracting and overly experimental for show.

FUNNY LINES:
This is not a humor-driven film; any light moments are brief and understated.

INTERESTING LINES:
- “The truth doesn’t disappear just because you stop talking about it.”
- “Being respected doesn’t mean being innocent.”
- “Not everything is supposed to be comfortable.” – Alma (Julia Roberts)
