MOVIE TITLE:     Are We Good?

posted in: Comedy, Documentary, True story | 1

RATING:     R

LENGTH: 1 hour 37 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:    B+

IN A NUTSHELL:

The documentary was directed and produced by Steven Feinartz. Steven must have the most patience and determination ever to put up with Marc Maron’s grumpiness. Many times in the documentary, we see Marc complaining and throwing shade on the film itself, saying he doesn’t really care if it gets made or not. The title comes at the very end when Marc says to Steven, “Alright. You got it? Are we good?”

Writing credits go to Julie Seabaugh.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Lots of profanity, including 13 million F-bombs
  • Talk and video clips of drugs, cigarettes, cigars, and alcohol
  • The entire film includes conversations about the death of a loved one and how to heal.
  • Talk of dementia

THEMES:

  • Grief
  • Love and Loss
  • Friendship
  • Support
  • The importance of laughter in healing

THINGS I LIKED:

  • If you get a kick out of Marc Maron and his comedy, you’ll enjoy this documentary, especially seeing another side of the famous comedian.
  • The film starts two months into the Covid lockdown and shows how Marc and all of us are still trying to make sense of it.
  • Marc’s girlfriend, Lynn, died and he shares how much he struggled after her passing. We literally watch him try to process it all in this film. We feel his grief and celebrate his newly-found insights. The film is dedicated to Lynn Shelton. I didn’t know anything about her, but she seemed absolutely lovely with a constant smile and positive attitude. She and Marc were a great example of how opposites attract. She was quick to laugh and absolutely died too young.
  • Marc opens up about his drug and alcoholic addictions. He says, “Self-destruction is not what it used to be, folks.”
  • We get to hear praise for Marc’s comedy by his fellow comedians who adore him, such as Nate Bargatze, Bill Burr, David Cross, Denis Leary, John Mulaney, Caroline Rhea, Michaela Watkins, and so many more.
  • Marc is honest about his life’s mistakes, exhibiting vulnerabilities and wisdom.
  • I enjoyed the song during the final rolling credits called “Let Us Be Devoured”. Interesting choice of words.
  • Keep watching during the final rolling credits to see more photos of Marc and his journey.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Many of the other comedians admit that Marc Maron’s personality and style of comedy isn’t for everyone. He’s crass, salty, and offensive. If you don’t want to be assaulted by a ton of F-bombs, this film is not for you.
  • Because the entire film focuses on how Marc has been dealing with the death of his girlfriend, it can feel heavy and sad.

FUNNY LINES:

  •  “So, I don’t want to be negative, but I don’t think anything is ever going to get better ever again.” – Marc Maron

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “I couldn’t make marriages work for whatever reason.” – Marc Maron
  • “It’s weird. When you get old, even if your weight is good, your body is a different shape than it used to be. Sorry…too much information?” – Marc Maron
  • “I’m just waiting for something to destroy me…and I think it’s me.” – Marc Maron
  • “How do you love somebody else if you really can’t love yourself?” –  Marc Maron

Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this site. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very hard to get that “perfect balance” between usability and visual appearance. I must say that you’ve done a fantastic job with this. In addition, the blog loads super quick for me on Internet explorer. Outstanding Blog!
