IN A NUTSHELL:

There is a Netflix documentary about the same story by the same director that came out in 2019, also called Last Breath.  This is a feature film of the true story that follows seasoned deep-sea divers as they battle the raging ocean during a storm to rescue their crew mate who is trapped hundreds of feet below the ocean’s surface.

The film was directed by Alex Parkinson.  Writing credits go to Mitchell LaFortune, David Brooks, and the director.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  •  Young kids might be bored or scared
  • Talk of death

THEMES:

  • Courage
  • Teamwork
  • Miracles still happen
  • Survival
  • Quick-thinking persistence
  • Hope

THINGS I LIKED:

  • The casting is great.  Woody Harrelson looks so much like the real-life man he plays in the story and provides the star power the film needs to drive more interest to it.
  • The rest of the cast also does a great job and includes Simu Liu, Finn Cole, Cliff Curtis,
  • Gorgeous cinematography.
  • It’s fascinating to learn about the incredibly dangerous job of saturation deep-sea diving and everything the crews go through on a daily basis to maintain the undersea gas lines in the North Sea.
  • In the movie, we see real underwater drone footage of the rescue.
  • Once the divers go in the water, you feel the tension until the very end.
  • The effective sound effects really take you there.
  • The crew on the ship exchange friendly barbs, which provides some humor to break up the serious drama.
  • The film is pretty straightforward.  Because it’s a true story, there aren’t a bunch of twists and turns.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • If you get seasick watching ocean movies, you might want to skip this one.
  • It feels pretty short and simple.
  • It’s best to NOT watch the trailer or look up any information about the true story so that you can be surprised.
