IN A NUTSHELL:

When Zeus fires Mother Nature for letting climate change spiral out of control, she gets one last chance to redeem herself—by convincing cynical Doomsday Prepper Zip Avila that there is hope for the planet.

Disguised as a mere mortal and accompanied by her devoted aide Alexandros, Mother Nature heads to Florida to find Zip. Sparks fly and tempers flare. As rising seas and dying bees paint a bleak picture, their unlikely bond grows into love. But rival goddess Lexi has her own plans to thwart Mother Nature’s efforts.

Laurie Criego makes her feature-length debut as a writer with her screenplay for Mother Nature And The Doomsday Prepper. Christian Cashmir directed the film.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • We see some cleavage
  • The word “suck” is used a few times.
  • We see a shirtless man several times.
  • There is talk of natural disasters around the world.
  • This is mostly family friendly.

THEMES:

  • The flaws of mortals
  • Climate change
  • Environmentalism
  • Opposites attract
  • Preparedness & Doomsday Preppers
  • Jealousy
  • Don’t worry. Beach happy!
  • Hope
  • Nature

THINGS I LIKED:

  • You may not recognize anyone in the cast, even though many have appeared in other things. The leading cast includes Brock O’Hurn, Kate Amundsen, Belen Cusi, Andrew Key, and Jonah McDonald, and Mallory Meias. Ninety percent of the crew came from local talent in in the Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg, Florida area where the movie was filmed.
  • I thought it was cute when the gods used an Alexa-like device called Athena to help answer their questions about the mortal world. There are quite a few plays on words that provide humor.
  • The topic of environmentalism are serious ones and hotly debated. The film does a good job making its point that we all need to do our part to take care of our planet home, yet the movie still has plenty of fun and is extremely lighthearted about the lecture.
  • The choices for background music were entertaining.
  • The last scene with Zeus and Zip before the rolling credits made me laugh out loud.
  • Parents can watch this with their kids and have good conversations about what they can do as a family to protect nature and our planet.
  • The overall feeling is light, fun, and silly.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Some of the acting is amateur and too over-the-top.
  • A few of the scenes last way too long to say what they need to.
  • So, now Mother Nature can’t just be a woman?
  • Obligatory dance sequence ending.
  • Zip didn’t seem like a crazy doomsday prepper at all. Living in a panicked emotional state because you think the world will end any minute isn’t healthy, but paying attention to the news and making a plan of action to be prepared to protect your family is wise. There are simple things you can do to be prepared without going overboard, such as storing extra water and food. That doesn’t make you a crazy doomsday prepper but a smart person.
  •  If you expect cheesy goofiness, you’ll get a kick out of this movie. If you’re tired of being preached at about climate change, you’ll probably want to skip this one.

FUNNY LINES:

  •  “Wow, time sure flies! Note to self: check in on mortals more often.” – Mother Nature (Kate Amundsen)
  • “We need okra if there’s an apocolypse? Have you tasted okra?” – Chloe Avila (Belen Cusi)
  • “How long can it take to change the mind of one mortal?” – Mother Nature (Kate Amundsen)
  • “What’s that smell?” – Alexandros (Eric Freeman) “I think it’s them…the mortals.” – Mother Nature (Kate Amundsen)
  • “Note to self: take self-defense classes. These mortals are mean.” – Mother Nature (Kate Amundsen)
  • “Oh, my Zeus!” – Mother Nature (Kate Amundsen)

INTERESTING LINES:

  •  “You know this is good for you!” – Mother Nature (Kate Amundsen)
  • “If Mother Nature were real, she’d tell you to not be so afraid. She’d tell you to appreciate the beauty of the Earth.” – Mother Nature (Kate Amundsen)
  •  “You mortals totally trashed the planet, and then everyone blames me!” – Mother Nature (Kate Amundsen)
