MOVIE TITLE:     Not Okay

This dark comedy satire is available exclusively on Hulu.

RATING:    R

LENGTH:      1 hour 40 minutes

MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE:  C

IN A NUTSHELL:

An ambitious young woman finds followers and fame when she poses as the survivor of a deadly attack, but she soon learns that online notoriety comes with a terrible price.  The movie takes a hard look at social media, Influencers, as well as what is real and what is not.

The movie was directed and written by Quinn Shephard.  She and co-star Nadia Alexander got engaged while filming the movie.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Zoey Deutch is a lovely actress and does a great job in this role.  Her character breaks the 4th wall while she explains to us everything she is experiencing and feeling, just like what happens on social media.  Unfortunately, her character is terribly unlikeable as a Millenial who is so desperate to be the center of attention that she has absolutely no integrity or self-respect.  Her scenes with Dylan O’Brien were super cringe because she completely throws herself at him.
  • I’ve been a fan of Dylan O’Brien for years ever since I first saw him in Maze Runner.  I especially loved him in Love and Monsters. When he first shows up in a scene, I didn’t even recognize him at first because he had dyed his hair blonde and was vaping like crazy.  His look was inspired by Machine Gun Kelly and Justin Bieber.
  • The secondary starlet of the movie is Mia Isaac who recently starred in the Amazon Prime Original Don’t Make Me Go.  She does a fantastic acting job too, but also plays an unlikeable character, in my opinion.  Of course, she has reason after her sister died in a school shooting, but she spews a lot of hatred with her moral superiority.
  • Real-life Influencer, Caroline Calloway, makes a cameo performance in the film.
  • I laughed at the name of the magazine where the main character works: Depravity.  It perfectly suits many of the characters in this story.
  • I liked the ending because everything does NOT get tied up in a nice bow.  Instead, it shows that there ARE consequences of our actions.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • While the movie is completely fictional, it reveals a lot of ugly truths in our society.  Hopefully, young viewers will understand the lessons that are illustrated.
  • It made me sad to think that there probably are a lot of Millennials and Gen Z’s out there like these characters who feel entitled to everything.
