Movie Review Mom GRADE:  C

IN A NUTSHELL:

The story is about an out-of-work actor who is struggling as a New York City realtor.  His world crashes down on him when his estranged 10-year-old daughter shows up unannounced on his doorstep in the middle of his eviction.

The film was directed and written by Simon Hacker.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • If you loved Michael Zegen in The Marvelous Mrs. Masel, you’ll enjoy his performance in this starring role too.  His character is a total disaster, and he plays it very well.
  • The rest of the cast does a great job creating very colorful characters too and includes Kasey Bella Suarez, Isabel Arraiza, Eric Berryman, Robert Klein, Michael Angelo Covino, Jaime Zevallos, Victor Verhaeghe, and more.
  • This movie will make you feel better about your own life.
  • New York and its insane real estate are highlighted in the film.
  • Keep watching during the rolling credits for another scene midway.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • This movie was a true slog to sit through.  I didn’t like the protagonist at all.  Most of the characters committed crimes the entire time.  I just wanted the insanity to end.
  • Based on the protagonist’s history, there is no real promise or hope that he is going to change.  I prefer movies that have some character growth.
  • The title didn’t quite work with the content.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Kids will be extremely bored.  So will some adults.
  • Profanity, including an F-bomb
  • A father teaches his daughter to be dishonest
  • We see protestors marching for animal rights and the environment
  • We see crude graffiti images on billboards

THEMES:

  • Parenting
  • Responsibility
  • Dishonesty
  • Childhood
  • Family
  • Divorce and broken families

FUNNY LINES:

  • Nothing worth noting.

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “You could Bxxch about things or you could do something.” – Anna  (Kasey Bella Suarez)
  • “Just because you had a baby doesn’t make you a dad.” – ex-wife  (Isabel Arraiza)
