Oceans 8 fills the franchise with sexy estrogen

Movie Title:    Ocean’s 8

Grade:   B+

Rating: PG-13, 110 minutes

In a Nutshell:   Warner Brothers Pictures gives us an estrogen-filled spin-off of the Ocean’s Eleven (2001) franchise that is entertaining enough.  I admit that after the all-female cast of Ghostbusters (2016) was a flop that this one would be too, but like the heist in the film, they pull it off.

Tips for parents:
    • There is a LOT of crime.  The beautiful women make it all look cool and easy.  They’re not exactly the best role models for your daughters.
  •  Some profanity.

Uplifting theme:
  •  Sisterhood
  • Tenacity
Things I liked:
    • Sandra Bulloch looks awesome, as always.  When is she going to start aging?  Her mother was born in Germany and Sandra actually lived there during most of her childhood, so she speaks Germany fluently.  You can see her mother’s name, Helga Meyer, on a crypt near Danny Ocean’s crypt.
    • For that matter, all of the women looked great.  The talented cast includes Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Awkwafina, and Sarah Paulson.  Between them, the cast includes two Emmy winners, nine Grammy winners, six Golden Globe winners, five BAFTA awards, and 10 SAG awards!  Wow!
    • I love how Cate Blanchett can transform her look and accent so much in every movie she is in.  I’m such a huge fan and wanted to see more of her in this movie.
  • Interesting social commentary at how it seems ok to commit a crime against a celebrity and fashion industry.
  • For fans of Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s trilogy, they tried to tie in this new cast with the George Clooney character Danny Ocean.  It worked.  They even started the film the same way as Ocean’s Eleven and ended with Sandra Bullock wearing a similar black tuxedo with the bow tie open that he did.  This film was released on the eleventh anniversary of Ocean’s Thirteen.  Nice.
  • Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue magazine plays herself in the movie.  She is also the woman who inspired the movie The Devil Wears Prada

Things I didn’t like:
  •  Directed by Gary Ross, this heist flick doesn’t take any risks, unlike the characters.
  • Predictable
  • While there was some chemistry between the characters, they were all just too cool for school with little tension between them.
  • There is some humor, but I never laughed out loud.

Funny lines:
    • “Revenge.  It’s a 2-fer.” – Claude Becker (Richard Armitage)
  • “There are barely any hackers who aren’t hackers.” –  Lou (Cate Blanchett)

Interesting lines:
  • “A ‘him’ gets noticed and, for once, we want to be ignored.” – Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock)
