MOVIE TITLE:             On the Line

This mystery thriller is now available on Amazon Prime Video and Vudu.

RATING:   PG-13

LENGTH:  1 hour 14 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:   C

IN A NUTSHELL:

The story is about a telephone operator in England in 1964.  She’s the the only person we see on the screen but we hear her answer the phone where a mysterious drama unfolds.

Oliver Pearn directed and produced the film, as well as wrote the screen play.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • I had never seen Victoria Lucie in anything before.  She did a great holding the entire movie on her shoulders.
  • The voices we hear on the other end of the phone calls come from Royce Pierreson, Harriet Walter, Thomas A. Bliss, Sally Geake, Richard Heap, and Melissa Thom. They all do a great job building tension with only their voices.
  • The camera angles keep things interesting.
  • The sound effects are especially important for us to feel the mood of the rainy night, as well as other background noises on the calls.
  • Filming well in one cramped location is always impressive work.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • There are already several other movies with the same title.  How about changing it to something like “Hold the Line”?
  • The film definitely feels like a podcast or stage play.
  • Unfortunately, the film just didn’t hold my attention for very long and will be unmemorable.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Kids will be bored.  So will many adults.
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Talk of danger

THEMES:

  • Fear
  • Dementia
  • Suicide
  • Hope
  • The human touch
  • Compassion
  • Kidnapping
  • The importance of listening

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “Sometimes, when we’re scare, sharing with someone can help us feel a little less scared.” –   Agnes  (Victoria Lucie)
