MOVIE TITLE: Peter Five Eight
This mystery thriller is now available in select theaters, and you can stream it on Fandango at Home and Vudu.
RATING: R
LENGTH: 1 hour 41 minutes
Movie Review Mom GRADE: C-
IN A NUTSHELL:
The story is about a seemingly glamorous real estate agent in a small mountain community is revealed to be an unhinged alcoholic with a dark secret when a charismatic man in black shows up one day at the behest of his shadowy boss.
The film was directed and written by Michael Zaiko Hall.
THINGS I LIKED:
- The title of the movie is based on a scripture in the Bible: Peter chapter 5, verse 8, which says, “Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil, walks as a roaring lion, walketh about seeking whom he may devour.” The only religious scene was in the last 2 minutes of the movie, although a few images of lions appear earlier. Kevin Spacey’s character’s name is Peter.
- People have extremely mixed feelings about Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey’s personal life and criminal assault charges; however, no one will deny his great acting talent.
- Rebecca De Mornay was such a gorgeous, popular actress in the 90s. We haven’t seen her in much lately, so it was good to see her.
- Other cast members include Jet Jandreau, Jake Weber, and Michael Emery.
- The dramatic music and opening credits make the film feel like something out of the 1970s.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- There are a lot of bad, stiff, and overacting acting moments.
- I had never seen Jet Jandreau in anything before. She has only 3 expressions: anger, surprise, and confusion. When she whispered her lines, I couldn’t understand anything she said.
- The movie felt like it was set in the 1970s except for the cars, cellphones, and a theater marquee that said 2021.
- At 22 minutes, the camera zooms in and out like an editing error.
- Unfortunately, I was really bored and didn’t like any of the characters.
- The ending is really dumb and unbelievable.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Kids will be totally bored. So will some adults.
- Gun violence with gory blood splatters
- A million F-bombs
- An unmarried couple talks about jumping into bed and we see them together in bed.
- Lots of alcohol and drunkenness
- Several murders are seen.
- A wife hits her husband.
THEMES:
- Second chances
- Repentance
- Revenge
- Choices and consequences
FUNNY LINES:
- “I run on controlled substances and inappropriate thoughts.” – Peter (Kevin Spacey)
- “God created man but then, God had a better idea.” – Brenda (Rebecca De Mornay)
INTERESTING LINES:
- “Details, details. Why fish for the devil?” – Peter (Kevin Spacey)
- “Your services are no longer required.” – Peter (Kevin Spacey) “Is that supposed to be funny?” – (Rebecca De Mornay) “No, it’s supposed to be direct.” – Peter (Kevin Spacey)
- “Words have no meaning. Let this be a lesson to you in false hope.” – Peter (Kevin Spacey)
