Ron’s Gone Wrong movie review

MOVIE TITLE:   Ron’s Gone Wrong

Currently, this family-friendly animated movie is only available in theaters.

RATING:    PG

LENGTH:     1 hour 47 minutes

IN A NUTSHELL:

Twentieth Century Studios and Locksmith Animation’s “Ron’s Gone Wrong” is the story of Barney, a socially awkward middle-schooler, and Ron, his new walking, talking, digitally-connected device, which is supposed to be his ‘Best Friend out of the Box.’ Ron’s hilarious malfunctions set against the backdrop of the social media age, launch them into an action-packed journey in which boy and robot come to terms with the wonderful messiness of true friendship.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • This buddy comedy is family-friendly entertainment, giving something for everyone to laugh at.
  • Your kids are going to want a b-bot robot.
  • The Selfie feature of these robots made me laugh out loud.
  • Because we can already tell what’s going to happen in the story, what makes the predictable journey enjoyable is the sweet relationship that the protagonist and his b-bot develop.
  • The talented cast that voices the cute characters includes Academy Award winner Olivia Colman, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Jack Dylan Grazer, Rob Delaney, Justice Smith, and many new, younger artists you may not have heard of before.
  • One of the elements of the story I appreciated was showing how much parents want their kids to be happy and accepted among their peers.  Everyone wants to be cool and popular, even adults.  Kids often don’t realize the sacrifices parents make to help them.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Some of the voices don’t sound like the characters’ designs.
  • It goes on way too long.
  • Very woke.
  • The actual character design of the humans is just average.  They tend to start looking alike just with different colored hair and skin.  They all had the same straight eyebrows.  It’s not the best animation we’ve ever seen but it’s still pretty cute.
  • Not all of the humor lands.
  • It’s extremely predictable because we’ve seen this kind of story and plot before.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Bullying
  • People in perilous situations
  • Lots of destruction

THEMES:

  • Friends and relationships
  • Loneliness
  • Connection
  • Peer pressure
  • Bullying
  • Generic products and knock-offs
  • Sharing
  • Superficiality
  • Acceptance
  • Big Tech and its intrusive, even insidious nature
  • Money and power

FUNNY LINES:

  • “Old women…not trending.” – Ron the bot   (Zach Galifianakis)

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “How can you have fun offline?” – corporate hack
