MOVIE TITLE:     Rose

This dramatic Danish film about mental illness is now available on Amazon Prime and Vudu.

RATING:    PG-13

LENGTH:      1 hour 45 minutes

MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE:     A

IN A NUTSHELL:

The story is about two sisters who travel to France on a vacation.  Inger has Schizophrenia and struggles each day.  The film was directed by Niels Arden Oplev who also wrote it.  Niels is the award-winning filmmaker of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.  He said he used experiences from his own sister’s life to illustrate the stigma that exists around mental illness.

Already, the film has been nominated for 7 awards, winning 3, including Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • I had never seen any of the actors before and I thought they all did an outstanding job. The leads include Lene Maria Christens, Anders W. Berthelsen, and Soren Malling.  Luca Reichardt Ben Coker is a young actor who is such a natural.
  • Sofie Grabol plays Inger. She disappears in the role and truly becomes Inger in an absolutely outstanding performance.
  • We get to go to Paris, Versailles, and Normandy! I love to travel in movies and in real life.  I was just in Paris, Versailles, and Normandy last August.
  • The time period is shortly after Princess Dianna died in Paris. Some of the characters visit the tunnel in Paris where she died in a car.
  • A little over an hour into the story, we learn the meaning behind the title of the film. It’s a great name for the movie.
  • The people who are traveling on a bus are from Denmark. One of my sons is dating a girl from Denmark.  We adore her and her family and I always get a kick out of listening to them speak Danish.
  • The characters are well defined and we see a wide span of emotions and reactions to Inger’s mental illness. We see the effect such an illness has on an individual, but also on the entire family.
  • While the movie isn’t a comedy, there are a lot of funny moments and conversations.
  • Road-trip movies should take you to interesting locations, but more importantly, show characters that experience new growth and insights because of the journey. This film does that very well and will stay with you for a long time.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • I wonder if Hollywood will try to remake this movie.  I loved this

  • The entire movie has subtitles that must be read.
  • We see a partial side view of a naked woman getting into a bathtub.
  • A woman gets hurt and bloodied.
  • Talk of a woman who sleeps in the nude
  • Talk of Princess Diana dying in a car crash in Paris
