MOVIE TITLE:    Escape The Field

This psychological thriller premieres in select theaters and on digital demand on May 6, 2022

RATING:  R

LENGTH:  1 hour 28 minutes

IN A NUTSHELL:

Rotten Tomatoes includes this summary of the movie:  The fear is inescapable and the suspense nonstop in this gripping horror-thriller about six strangers who suddenly awaken in a remote, endless cornfield. Stripped of their possessions, they are left with only six items: a gun with a single bullet, matches, a lantern, a knife, a compass, and a flask of water. As mysterious sirens blare in the distance and traps appear at every turn, the group realizes it’s been plunged into a cat-and-mouse game with an unseen evil, and survival depends upon solving a diabolical — and deadly — puzzle.

It sounds like an intense room escape, right?  The survival thriller was directed by Emerson Moore, who also helped write the screenplay.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • I’m always happy to discover new actors.  I didn’t recognize any of the cast members.  Do you?  They include Jordan Claire Robbins, Theo Rossi, Tahirah Sharif, Julian Feder, Elena Juatco, Shane West, and Niki Kerro.
  • It reminded me of the TV series LOST which also had mysterious happenings and even a helpful healthcare provider in the cast.  I really got sucked into the first few seasons and then the writers got lost, ending the season with a thud.  Did you ever see it?
  • It definitely feels like an escape room experience.  At first, I just thought a bunch of monsters was going to chase people around a cornfield, and there is some of that, but there are more interesting puzzles that the people have to figure out that keep it interesting.  If you like solving mysteries, you’ll enjoy that element of the film.
  • I’m always impressed with scenes filmed at night by fire because I know that can be very tricky.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • The plot of the movie is very similar to the one in Stephen King’s book In The Tall Grass.
  • It always frustrates me when characters don’t talk to each other about important things they’ve seen or what they’re experiencing.  It leads to people making dumb decisions, which is super common in horror movies.  This movie doesn’t have all of the blood and guts of hardcore horror, but there is some of that.
  • Some of the characters are super annoying, so I was wishing they’d be the first ones to go.
  • Sometimes, it’s hard to tell what are sound effects and what are elements of the musical score.
  • The ending is a bit frustrating without a satisfying resolution.
  • Ultimately, many questions go unanswered and we’re given the idea that there will be a sequel, which is something we might not even want.  Do you want to see more of this?  Comment down below!

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • A conversation about a lesbian.
  • You see blood
  • People get hurt and die
  • Violence

THEMES:

  • Teamwork
  • Reprogramming experiments
  • Talk of government and private testing on humans
  • Uncertainty
  • Instinct
  • Trust

FUNNY LINES:

None.  This is a serious drama from the very beginning to the end.

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “It’s all about instinct for me.  You gotta trust your gut.” – Ryan  (Shane West)
  • “I’m done playing their game!” –  Sam  (Jordan Claire Robbins)
