Movie Title: Small Foot Purchase link: Smallfoot (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Combo Pack) (BD)
Grade: B+
Rating: PG, 109 minutes
In a Nutshell: Warner Brothers Pictures brings us a cute animated movie that will satisfy little ones, as well as big ones. There is plenty of colorful, goofy fun, along with a hefty moral dilemma and lesson for all of us. There is a surprising deep message about governance as well, something I wish more of our leaders would think about.
Tips for parents:
- A little bit of writing that children will need to read.
- No profanity or any inappropriate innuendos at all. Nice!
- Use this movie to talk to your kids about tolerance and trying to see the world from another person’s perspective. There are plenty of powerful messages to begin good discussions with kids of all ages here.
- The Yeti aren’t scary at all. In fact, I suspect a lot of children will want to buy them as a stuffed animal to play or sleep with. They’re pretty lovable.
Funko Plush: Smallfoot – Migo 8″ Collectible Figure, Multicolor
Uplifting theme:
- “Always be true.” – Migo (Channing Tatum)
- “Questions lead to knowledge.” – Meechee (Zendaya)
- “Knowledge is power.” – Gwangi (LeBron James)
- There’s nothing wrong with being curious.
- “Be a seeker of the truth.” – Meechee
- Integrity
- Sacrifice for the good of others
- Friendship
Things I liked:
- Peppy songs that make you feel good.
- The talented cast includes Channing Tatum, James Corden, Zendaya, Common, LeBron James, Danny DeVito, Gina Rodriguez, Patricia Heaton, and more!
- James Cordon’s character reminds me of the wonderful Australian “Crocodile Hunter.” Steve Irwin. How we all miss his enthusiastic animal adventures!
- I loved the funny side remarks some characters made.
- There are some cute and funny visual moments.
- For a children’s animated movie, the character arc is quite impressive in this little story.
- I thought it was so funny when James Cordon’s character speaks “human” and the Yetis only hear a high-pitched gibberish. The film’s editor, Peter Ettinger, created the human “language” and is the voice talent for that part. So cute.
- The song at the movie is called “Finally Free” and is sung by Niall Horan. Purchase link for iTunes download: Finally Free (From “Smallfoot”)
- There is a tiny romance in the story, but it’s based on friendship and admiration. How refreshing.
Things I didn’t like:
- There is no clear villain. Both the humans and Yetis believe each other are monsters.
- The movie opens with a musical number, but there really isn’t very much music in it compared to some animated musicals. I would have loved more original numbers.
Funny lines:
- “Curiosity killed the yak.” – Stonekeeper (Common)
Interesting lines:
- “It’s not just about tearing down old ideas. It’s about finding new ones.” – Meechee
- “A life that’s full of wonder is a wonderful life.” – Meechee
- “I miss being ignorant.” – Migo
- “You’ll never succeed if your aim isn’t true.” – Dorgle (Danny DeVito)
- “Well, there goes my fame.” – Percy
“Yeah, but you have something better…integrity.” – Brenda (Yara Shahidi)
- “It’s complicated and scary, but it’s better than living a lie.” – Migo
- “You think knowledge is power? The question is ‘what are you going to do with that power?’” – Stonekeeper
