IN A NUTSHELL:
I’ve never played the Sonic video games, but all 4 of my sons did while growing up. I have seen all of the movies though! My favorite was the first one because it did a really great job introducing who Sonic was and why he is so beloved.
In this sequel, we see Sonic reunited with Knuckles and Tails as they face a new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. Ivo Robotnik lashes out with a new partner, his long-lost grandfather. Mayhem and jokes ensue.
The sequel was directed by Jeff Fowler. Writing credits go to Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington. This is a movie that audiences and film critics agree is a lot of fun for fans of the video games.

THINGS I LIKED:
- The animation is pretty amazing. The facial expressions and body movements are especially impressive.
- It’s colorful, energetic, and creative.
- I love the visual details.
- It’s good to see Jim Carrey in something again. He’s so talented and funny, yet has left Hollywood for the most part in recent years. He stated he was considering retirement and would only return if “the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see.” It’s hard to believe that this is the movie that qualified for his return to film, but it looked like he was having a blast in this role. It took him 1 ½ years to grow out his hair simply so Lee Majdoub’s character could actually shave it off in a scene on set!
- I adore Keanu Reeves. Who doesn’t? He voices the new character “Shadow” the Hedgehog and had to research the character because he wanted to create a “faithful version” of him.
- Other talented cast members include Ben Schwartz as Sonic, James Marsden, Idris Elba, Tika Sumpter, Krysten Ritter, Lee Majdoub, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and the adorable, young Alyla Browne.
- There’s a cute moment where we see a short clip from the 1995 movie Caspar. My kids loved that movie when they were growing up.
- The movie is very self-aware and pokes fun at itself constantly.
- We get to spend a little time in London!
- Surprisingly, this is the first time a Sonic movie has been released in IMAX worldwide.
- Fans of the Sonic video games will be happy with the MANY inclusions in this movie that reference details in the games. Keep your eyes open for the Easter eggs!
- There is plenty of humor, although not all of it lands.
- Keep watching the rolling credits at the end of the movie, about midway, for another scene that sets up Sonic 4 that features Metal Sonic and Amy Rose!

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- It’s helpful to have seen the 2 prior Sonic movies in order to better understand the characters, their relationships, and their motivations.
- Viewers who have never played the video games or seen the 2 previous movies might feel a little lost and bored.
- There are a lot of characters to keep track of in this one.
FUNNY LINES:
- “Team Sonic? Who picked that name?” – Knuckles (Idris Elba)

- “There’s something about my personality that renders me undesirable to all possible genders.” – Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey)
- “How? Why? And who did what with whom?” – Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carey)
- “Yes, I know French.” – Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey)
- “How dare you insult me with your unsolicited exposition.” – Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carey)
- “Once again, can’t we just get Tom Cruise to do this?” – Sonic (Ben Schwartz)
- “Revenge guac!” – Shadow (Keanu Reeves)
- “Don’t tell me you’ve got a catch phrase.” – Shadow (Keanu Reeves)

INTERESTING LINES:
- “That’s the thing about life: it’s all about the choices we make. You’re going to make some good ones and, knowing you, you’re going to make some bad ones, but as long as you remember to listen to your heart, you’re going to make the right choice when it matters the most.” – Tom (James Marsden)
- “Remember, make good choices!” – Maddie (Tika Sumpter)
- “We all have a role to play. That’s what makes the team so special.” – Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey)
- “Have you ever wondered what your life would have been like if you had a family?” – Sonic (Ben Schwartz)
- “What kind of hero abandons his friends to pursue revenge?” – Shadow (Keanu Reeves)
- “There are no winners with revenge.” – Sonic (Ben Schwartz)
- “I’ve been so blinded by rage I thought I had no choice.” – Shadow (Keanu Reeves) “You always have a choice.” – Sonic (Ben Schwartz)
