MOVIE TITLE: The Hyperions
This off-beat and retro comedy is now available at www.TheDailyWire.com
RATING: R (Even though the movie is being touted as family-friendly, it IS rated R for blood and violence)
LENGTH: 1 hour 30 minutes
IN A NUTSHELL:
In 1960, professor Ruckus Mandelbaum invents the Titan badge, which offered a handful of humans various powers and created an unusual family of superheroes. However, by 1979, a new line of superheroes had taken up the badges and two of the originals want them back.
The film is written and directed by Jon McDonald. Releasing exclusively on the Daily Wire on March 10th, 2022, this will be the third feature film to be released by the conservative company, following 2020’s “Run Hide Fight” and 2022’s “Shut In.” You can see my reviews of the other two films on my website and YouTube channel. I thought Ben Shapiro’s company was off to a great start, but this movie takes the momentum to a screeching halt.
I really wanted to like this movie. I’m happy to support “The Daily Wire” in their new adventure into filmmaking. Their last two movies were really well done. Sadly, my husband and I were both very disappointed. My husband was massaging my feet while we watched the movie and I STILL couldn’t wait for the movie to end.
THINGS I LIKED:
- Didn’t we all fall in love with Cary Elwes when we first saw him in The Princess Bride? He does a great job in this movie and stole my attention whenever he was on screen. I love that his physical posture was slouched the entire time as he tried to become a completely different man. He was the best actor in the movie BY FAR.
- Other than Cary Elwes, the only other two actors I had ever seen before were Tanner Buchanan and Alphonso. I’m happy to discover new faces in the film industry.
- The movie actually looks like it was made in the 1960s. Some viewers will love the nostalgic style. Others will think it’s just a poorly-made movie on a very low budget.
- It’s SUPER quirky with random animation sequences.
- The last scene is actually very sweet.
- Ultimately, I think I understand what this film was trying to do. It just didn’t work for me AT ALL.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- Most of the acting was really, really bad. With so much acting talent around the world, how did some of these people get cast in this movie? Were they just acting badly on purpose? I don’t get it.
- The action sequences were laughable.
- Most of the humor just didn’t land for me.
- I thought it was super weird that the final showdown was cut up and ends abruptly off the screen.
- The camera angles and edits were just odd. I think I just didn’t understand or appreciate what this film was trying to be. A review I read suggested that the director was trying to pull off a Wes Anderson style. Yes! That makes sense now. It just didn’t work.
- The movie could have easily been family-friendly; however, all of a sudden, at the end of the movie, there are a bunch of bloody images with dead bodies that instantly qualify the film as rated R. It’s like the director or the marketers of the film didn’t know what this movie was supposed to be.
