IN A NUTSHELL:

1 room. 2 people. 50 days. $5 million! Could you do it? I would accept that challenge in a heartbeat!

Mike (Emile Hirsch) and Kate (Kate Bosworth), a seemingly perfect couple, join a psychological experiment to compete for 5 million dollars if they can last 50 days in a sleek, white room in complete isolation. No phones, no family – only the Voice of the Immaculate Room keeping them in check if they think of straying. But as the clock ticks down, the Room becomes more than it seems, putting them through cruel tests to break their resolve and resurfacing private demons which they may not survive.

The intriguing film was directed by Mukunda Michael Dewil (Vehicle 19). It has already won the Best Feature & Best Actor Award at the Mammoth Film Festival, and the Best Feature Award at the London Independent Film Awards.

THINGS I LIKED:

This was the first movie to get the green light for filming in Los Angeles during the pandemic. Focused mainly on just two people in a sterile room, this was the perfect project during the Covid crisis.
Kate Bosworth gives us a focused, complex character that I enjoyed watching. I love that her character did positive affirmations every morning to show us how she had a plan for her life and wanted to control her mind and environment for success. It was fascinating to watch her mindset waiver as she and her boyfriend went through the process of the Immaculate Room.
Have you ever watched the popular TV show on Netflix called “Alone”? People have to survive in the wilderness completely alone, hunting their own food, building their own shelter, and hoping wild animals don’t kill them. The scenario in this movie would be a piece of cake compared to that!
Interesting sound effects.
I was intrigued by what the purchased “gifts” were and how the two main characters handled them.
The premise of the movie is interesting, and I was impressed at how quickly the filmmakers explored every aspect.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

Emile Hirsch’s character was bored on the very first day. I’m 100% positive I could entertain myself longer than that! His character seemed very juvenile, making me wonder how the couple ever got together in the first place because they had such opposite personalities.
We didn’t get to see the couple laugh and really enjoy each other’s company very much before things started going downhill in order to balance the emotions. They just didn’t seem like they ever really liked each other, resulting in the audience’s apathetic attitude about whether or not they stayed together or broke up.
The lack of stimulating conversation was frustrating.
I felt like there were many missed opportunities. The story just barely scratched the surface of where it could have gone.
That awful “food” would have been such a terrible disappointment.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

Kids will be bored. So will some adults.
You see a topless woman who makes suggestive comments.
The main couple is not married.
